My mother calls it an "Oak Moon". Apparently, it's as large as it gets in recent times. I was too late with the camera to catch some foreground branches with it.

Wow that is a really good picture. I just happened to go out to walk my dog ealier and as soon as I walked out the door there it was. I had to stop and look at it for a moment and then call my mom and tell her. I wish I had a good camera. Where I was looking there was a nice maple tree with its branched wrapping around the moon. It would have been an awesome pic. Oh well glad someone got a good picture. What camera are you using?

Great picture! I read that the moon won't be this close again until 2016. Amazing how bright it is outside.

Oak Moon is the English Medieval name given to the December full moon.

Cool, Oak Moon. When I first saw it this evening it was just coming out big and yellow still below the tree line but could be seen through my biggest oldest White Oak, call it the Indian tree. Wonder where the name comes from, just seeing it through the oaks, like I did?

Thanks guys. Had it not been so cold (11 degrees last night) I may have taken more time to get a better shot. JDk, I'm shooting with a Canon 30D. This shot was with my 400mm plus 1.4x teleconverter. If you really want to see some amazing shots, check out this thread on a photo website I frequent. One guy took the time to mark all of the Apollo landing sites on his photo!
And thanks for the background on the "Oak Moon".

Great picture and the moon was something truly exceptional - I raised my glass to it too

Nice picture and nice link. This is interesting because my little companion Charlie (mix between Yorkie and Miniature Schnauzer) decided I needed to take him out at about 3am. I thought maybe my old eyesight was getting better because I sure did have good 'night vision' last night.
Then when reading the news this morning I read about the moon being brighter than it has been in 15 years. So much for my eyesight getting better. I'd hoped that there would be a clear sky in my are tonight so I could try to take my own picture of the moon, but it looks that won't happen as the forecast calls for clouds. Oh well, I enjoyed it early this morning and my photography skills aren't all that great even though I appreciate great photography. It's one of those things I long to become proficient at. I keep telling myself that I ought to bite the bullet and buy a really nice setup since all four of my five kids still live at home. My oldest technically still lives at home, but is mostly away at school in Lexington, VA.
