It's so tough putting family to rest.

Bummer. I have a friend that has had to bury a few as he had a full size TLB. Some of his stories were just wrong! Northland,I just loved our English Mastiff but he passed at age seven, common for the big guys. Got our son a lab when he turned twelve, best dog ever but he also died at seven, now got a mix from a shelter-still going strong.

now got a mix from a shelter-still going strong.

That's what I was thinking too when I got the mix from the pound. My Danes were 8.5 and 6.5 years old-raw food fed with no vaccinations and they still died too young.

My friend has three Mastiffs (all big 190+ lb girls) and they are almost ten years old now.

Where we live we have a lot of black bears so I like the security of a big dog or two when we are picking berries, fishing or hiking.

But like a dog the best way to get over this is to get a new one. My wife said why don't we go to a horse rescue. I'm not sure, yes it's good for the horse but I really want to stick to quarters and ones that are bomb proof. I'm not a horse man, I just love them and know how to take care of them.
Sorry about your loss. We also have some older horses in our group. The oldest is 31 and the next is 29. My wife has owned the oldest since she was 5. Both are getting hard to keep no matter what we do. I catch the oldest laying down out in the field alot these days. I figure one morning on finding here gone in her stall but she keeps fooling me with her morning greetings. One of the hardest to deal with was a stunning seven year old Arabian mare that had an invasive tumor in her nasel system. Two ops and it would still come back so we kept her on meds until she got laminitis from the meds then put her down.

I have done it both ways with dogs. I have gone out and gotten one after dropping one off to be cremated (could not bury him where I was) and I have waited for one to come to me after awhile. Either way is tough and the new addition will always be different no matter how much you want them to be like the one that you lost.

While we have taken in rescue horses now and then, I personally have never gotten one from a rescue group. I read "the Horse" on line. Each newsletter carries a rescue for adoption from various groups. They clearly state the horse's situation. Seems like a viable source to consider to me. Anyone who has ever purchased horses or has friends that have certainly knows why there are so many monikers attached to the business.

When I bury one, I like to have a machine large enough to pick the horse totally off of the ground. I wrap the legs with some old canvas then chain them together so as not to tear things up. Luckily at my last farm, my neighbor would let me borrow his backhoe. I need to start looking at my options now I suppose.

It has been a few weeks and we have noticed that we really are taking better care of our dog. It is going to be hard when she goes for the kids. Black lab mix. Best dog.

In stead of a mas have you looked at rots. They can be really loyal and strong when needed. It must be hard with wolves, in that you really can't kill it. We now have some in Colorado again.

We are looking at a new horse. Probably going to get a quarter about 15 hands. Probably get two. The horse idea is good. They probably have a few. We really should get two this time. That way they have a friend.

I went out today after the snow was gone to make sure that the kyots had not done anything to her grave. I noticed that the dirt is starting to lower down now. But the shape looks like a head and shoulders of a horse running. klind of a cool look.

Coming home from dinner my wife looked over to see if she could see glowing eyes. Said that she might want to get another horse soon.

Would it be strange to use same bit for a new horse? I would clean it of course.
