Bob Rooks:
On mine the clutch is used when shifting ranges on the PTO(540,off,960) or the HST. During engine start the clutch disconnects all the load from the engine. Once running you dont use it for forward/reverse or speed changes.
I was just wondering if mine has 2 clutches in there. probably not.

Well that just goes to show you what I know about (wheeled) tractors.
I never would have thought a manual clutch would be necessary with a HST because when the pump is at null there is zero oil being pumped, even with the engine running at full-tilt-boogie. Oh well. I apologize for interrupting the train of thought.

My 454 does that too, I consider it normal. Just as an otherwise disengaged PTO spline turns gently because of parasitic (hydrostatic) churning of gear oil, so does the main drive shaft when the tranny is in gear. I'm guessing that there was some otherwise negligible slippage in your main drive clutch before, that was remedied when you adjusted the stack height. And you're right, it's more noticeable when the gear oil is cold.

Whew, that's good to know then.
Do you have a loader on that 454 Greg?
Did it do it on gravel and dirt too?

Another "diagnostic" I'd recommend, is hooking up a PTO-driven implement to make sure it stops completely when the PTO lever is disengaged.

I checked that.
The PTO shaft was turning from hydrostatic force just like before when it was in neutral. I didn't hook up an implement but took a 2 x 4 and scraped it against the PTO shaft and it stopped turning. Once I knew it was disengaged, I grabbed it and stopped it by hand like I was able to do before. NTOE: I don't recommend doing that as the first try to determine whether a PTO is engaged or not though. Use something else or hook a PTO implement to it.

Did you also shorten the front drive shaft and fabricate a spacer? or is that a project for another day?

Project for another day ... hopefully never!:D

No loader, I use the TS354C for loader work.

And I don't have any concrete or asphalt on my property, so yes. On those rare occasions that I take the KM454 up on the highway, it's strictly for point to point travel - and is usually at operating temps anyway. So yes, this happens on gravel and dirt - but seemingly just when the gear oil is cold and thick. Gotta admit that my memory is not what it used to be, but I don't recall noticing the phenomenon in the summertime.
