Blueriver here in NC you have always had to have proof of ins if stopped. If no proof then the vehicle would be towed to the next tow company that was on the list 's storage yard till proof of ins was obtained. I know in a lot of the country ins isn't required but if someone runs into my truck I want some way of knowing the repairs will be paid for by the at fault party. I think required proof of ins. is a good idea. Later, Nat

Bet it will make the tow companies very happy. I always replace my insurance cards and throw away the old ones. It is amazing how many people have insurance, but they have so many expired cards in the glove box it takes them forever to find the current one. Worse, they forget to put the new one in the vehicle, get a citation and then have to go to the trouble of getting the proof of current insurance to the courts.

Serves the people with no insurance right. Seems like there are more and more in my area with no insurance.

That's how it works in my county... 30-day impound... costs over $1000 with towing.

They do the same if driving without a valid license.

The no insurance problem is becoming very wide spread. A lot of states now require drivers to carry in addition to liability insurance "Uninsured or Under Insured" insurance. NC law on the Uninsured or Under Insured became effective 01/01/09. For a good article on insurance requirements go the web link below/ The requirement by state is towards to end of the article.

Off subject, apologies, but since talking about NC per motor vehicles, I found it interesting that for 2009, all motor vehicles in NC will not have an inspection sticker on the front, left bottom portion of the windshield, but on the license plate instead.

Actually makes some sense.

Per the "proof of insurance" topic, without some sort of data base exchanging information between the state and insurance companies, what's from stopping someone to "buy" car insurance, get their "proof of insurance" card from the insurance company, and then cancell their policy?

So when your plate gets stolen, the thief gets a valid inspection as well. Makes no sense to me. Inspection stickers are much more visible on the windshield. While you are at it, put a plate on the front of those NC vehicles, too.

In NY the DMV and insurance companies communicate very well. If coverage lapses, the carrier notifies the DMV. DMV then serves notice that the plates must be surrendered, or new proof of insurance provided. If not, a State Trooper appears so the owner can surrender the plates from the comfort of his own home.

Yea... Many years now... thats why I tell my wife and kids to have the vehicle towed to our property... Storage fees are like $50.00 a day for a wrecked car!
