Kubota Front Mount Snowblower: Check Shear Pins!

I needed a left side shear pin on the weekend. The right pin was a Grade-5 5/16" X 2 1/4 bolt 'necked down' to 1/4 inch in two places. I bought (2) Grade-5 5/16" X 2 1/2" bolts at the hardware store (no 2 1/4 bolts). Put (each of) the new bolts next to the (unbroken) right side pin and marked the locations of the two necked down areas with a 'Sharpie'. Chucked up the threads of each new bolt in my drill press and used a disc grinder (4" Harbor freight) to cut the two necked down sections to below 1/4".

I just make sure I have a 1/2 dozen of each shear type before the season starts. My local Kubota dealer has a giant bag of shear pins and he remarked to me how many he sells. His opinion is that people should never be shearing the pins, and that there is operator error involved when they do. Like not having the skid shoes adjusted or snowblowing dirt and rocks. Having said that, I shear one from time to time, usually from something the street plows push into my drive.

That's true...though the shear bolts for the Augur cost $12 each at the Kubota dealer. Manual says they're "special". Must be.

I am not sure what blower you have but my shear bolts purchased from the dealer were $1 each. $12 each seems way out of line.
