Mahindra 6520 4WD
Today while down in my pond digging, (see I finally started my pond) in the Projects forum) my 6520's fan belt pulley came apart. I hope Mahindra has one in their Houston warehouse! I heard a ticking ealier, but couldn't fit the noise, even with putting a screw driver to the hyd. pump and alternator and the handle to my ear. I even shut her down and felt belt tension. Everything was fine, until the ticking stopped and my battery light came on, followed by the over temp light. I had enough time to stow the backhoe and limp back to the barn. This was at twilight this evening.

I think pulley disintegration would be king of rare...

Can you tell if it was metal fatigue or did the pump or alternator seize?

At first I thought it was the alternator, but when I opened the side cowl, I saw the pulley in two pieces and thought.........Oh $$$$$$ it is the Hyd. pump. But I thought, if it was the pump, I never would have got the backhoe stowed or the loader raised to max height in the barn. Then I realized it was just the pulley.

Wow, and I thought that things like this only happens to me. My 8.3 Cummins diesel did this on my dozer a few months ago. Of all the things that can go wrong, who would expect the pulley to break apart?

Looks like an easy repair.

Hope you get the parts quickly and can get back to working. Funny how things happen to tractors on pond projects!!!!

Eddie,
The Cummins in my Dodge pickup broke the fan clutch at the hub and sent it flying into the radiator Christmas before last. It should be easy to reinstall. 4 bolts for the pulley, put the belt back on and tighten it, then reinstall two bolts with the fan guard. What is amazing is the pulley just fell, doing no harm!

Hey Brandi if you wouldn't mind taking a picture of the carnage I'd like to see what broke. I'll keep my eye out for this on mine then! Hope the big beast makes a swift recovery! Ditto on the pond details!

Tim_in_IA,
Glad to hear from you. The photo of the remains of the pulley are here in post # 1.
I got her running at 3 pm. Had to go to Mahindra in Houston to pick up the part. The parts guy said I am famous around there. He said he reads my blog. I said that makes two people. hehe The pulley came with a splined hub. The 4 new bolts were 1/4 inch shorter than the ones in it. The old ones seemed to be a tad long and could have rubbed into the gearbox cover. I will show Top Flight's service manager this when he gets back from a few days off to get my warranty. I took photos of the new shorter bolts installed. I will ask for some 1/8 inch longer to replaced the new bolts . The hub flange is about 5/16th inch thick and the new bolts go about half way through the threads. Anyway, another reason to live in Texas.......two hours there and back and I had the part. Total time down....................21 hours! No bad. The part cost me $81.58 . The new fan belt, which I really didn't need now, was $28.35. The fan belt only had a small nick in it, so I used it.

I've been following your thread here....Good on Ya Girl! Glad your pulley didn't detonate other stuff that would have caused a much longer down time and much higher price....Don't suppose you took a pic or two while you had the cowling off replacing the hub/pulley?? BobG in VA
