Gas Grill / Natural vs propane

One caution about converting from propane to natural gas.........

We live in the city and when we bought a nice high end grill I purposely had it specc'd in nat gas. I ran a line from the shutoff in the basement that feeds the fireplace starter and it works perfectly. In fact, too perfectly.

We grill a lot, and one Sunday my wife went out to preheat the grill, only to find it already on and fully warmed up. She then realized the last time we'd used it was the Sunday before!

With propane, all you can lose is a bottle, with nat gas...............well you see my point........

Fortunately, we never did that. The first little house we bought in 1968 had a very small natural gas grill on the patio, so when we bought a new house in 1972, I actually bought the grill (biggest one they had at the time) from the gas company and had them install it, then I did the same thing again when we bought another new house in 1977. The convenience of the natural gas grill is hard to beat. But if it's permanently mounted by the concrete patio, as ours were, you can have a problem if you have a male dog. I had to replace the post on the last one when corrosion ruined it.

I ended up having the gas company do the work - Our grill has 3 burners so he had to drill 3 holes.

Yes, that is probably the easiest and best way of doing it.

I believe natural gas doesn't burn as hot as propane. We converted to natural gas and it seems we can't get the grill as hot with natural gas as propane. We still love the fact of no more bottles.

We also ran a line to our screened in porch to use a heater in the fall

sounds like you needed to mount a piece of wire mesh over the post with insulators and hook it up to an electric fence charger... it would only take once or twice for the dog to realize that peeing on that would be a "Bad Idea" (TM)
