Am i the only one that appreciated a nice patina on an old gun

no, you're not, but if he wants tyo make it "look nice" for the kids, it's not doing any harm. Personally, I've had good luck with the offerings from Birchwood Casey - steel wool to prep the surface, a good degreaser to clean it up, then successive coats of cold blue cream until it's the color I want. (wipe down with cold water and dry thoroughly between coats) When the last coat is one, wipe down with gun oil to "set" the bluing. (I also like their "plum brown" solution a lot)

Hmm.. I think the natural patina.. 'looks nice'.

Also.. I collect old guns.. most of them loose vale if they ae refinished.

Gun Bluing is the same thing as black oxide. There is the cold process, and the hot process. The hot process takes the part to approximately 250 degrees F. in heated tanks, and is much better than the hand process. However, the hand process is typically acceptable for addressing scratches.
Look for "Black oxide" in your yellow pages, or find a local industrial plater with this capability at ThomasNet® - CNC Machining, Metal Stamping, Gaskets, Fasteners and other industrial products and services.

Greetings, Its been years and years but I used cold blueing and it worked very well. You can go over it more than once to get a better finish. Richard
