Hi what would make a fuel shutoff solenoid get hot? Does this mean it isn't adjusted properly or is just defective? I am imagining that it wants to be at a full retraction when it is powered and if it cant seat completely that it overheats. I have a new one but I want to make sure I get it right so I don't burn up a new one. It is for a Kubota 3 cyl. D950

Thanks,
-Tim

The fuel solenoid will get hot as it is a magnetic coil. If it overheats it will either drop out and stall the engine or blow the fuse. They will draw around 30amps for a few seconds during startup (pick) then drop to around 2 or 3 when running (hold). Do you have any way of putting a DC current clamp on the power wire?

No adjustment required.

Hi yes I can do that. I am just glad my fuse holder was bad as that slow burn fuse is $13 delivered. Unless someone has a cheaper source. So you're saying it doesn't matter if it cycles all the way back that it shouildnt overheat? I know this one overheated as it was cold and I noticed the steam coming off it and I instinctively reached out and touched it to check, yup burnt my fingerprints off hot :)

It failed and the engine shut off.

There should be three wires on the newer ones. A ground, a key switch hot, and one from the starter. I can't remember off hand but if you don't have one of the hots hooked up (or bad connection) or reversed it will get too hot to hold, and then fail.

this is on an older D950 on a jacobsen mower. It has 2 terminals. a ground, and a hot from the starter.

Any selinoid will overheat if the part it is "pulling on is bound up or if the plunger that is pulled into the selinoid cannot be fully drawn into the selinoid coil.

Try adjusting the parts so the plunger can be fully retracted by the selinoid coil when energized.

That's what I was thinking. There is an adjustable head screw bolt that appears I can tune it. Hopefully it isn't all burned up. At least I'll know for the next one if I need to replace it.
