I know this is a thread for projects done w/ the tractor so for anyone I tick off by this post I will be using a PHD to dig holes (or maybe my new BH if I can convince the wife before spring) I have a section of woods that is pretty bare and I really want to fill it in w/ a bunch of trees. I was hoping some of you could advise what trees produce lots of seedlings. I would prefer a evergreen but any suggestions would be great, thanks.

yuck - cottonwood.

How about silver maple ? If you never rake the leaves or mow around it, you will get little trees every year from the seeds every spring.

You talked about evergreen. Both hemlock and fir reproduce themselves well. I have one cedar in my yard, I am always pulling new starts from where it drops seeds.

anywhere in the woods where the soil has been disturbed by new roads you will see new trees pop in the next year. I swear, there won't be an alder within miles and they will be there like weeds.

Poplar or Aspen, I think they are the same thing just called differently in different parts of the country, anyway I timbered about 40% of my property in northern Mn about 3 years ago 160 acres and did not plant anything to replace what was harvested but mother nature took it's course and there are thousands and thousands of new trees growing and all are 6 to 12 ft already. Amazing. MH MN

White pines[probably any pine]grow fast,,gum trees start pretty quick if you got an old one that is. Walnut, hickory, but again you need an old one.

I didn't see where youi said how large an area, Upstate NY, one good tree would be some sugar maples, later years you an tap them and make some syrup. I have done this small time last 3 years, yummy and not to hard. I have mature woods with a good % already maples. any maple will produce sap but some takes more sap to make syrup.

Sugar maple grows slower than most maples though. Red & Silver maple will grow about fastest of any tree in your area. If you are dead set on pines, not a lot of them self seed very well until conditions are met. life span, fire, or other damage often will make them produce more pine cones and or seed down better for pines. White pine will grow about the fastest in your area, watch out for ice storms and heavy snow. deep also love them when they are small.

I planted scotch pine and now have thousands grown up from seeds off the original plantings. If I could go back 20 years and do it again though I'd plant a valuable tree that may take longer to grow as well as the fast growing scotch pine.

Thanks to all for the replys guys keep em coming I am compiling a list from your feedback. The area in question is roughly 1/2 acre.

In doing some research yesterday I seen some trees produce suckers which can fill an area very quickly so any feedback on this would be great as well, thanks again

1/2 acre is not large. Is cost the reason you are wanting the planted trees to produce more seedings? If so you may find your state forestry dept has trees or seedlings for low price. But look at what you want the area to be used for in 5 to 30 years and plant for that.
