I was grading a gravel driveway today with my 98' 231 Massey Ferguson (which I Dearly love!). It has never gave me a problem.

It was running fine like it always does. I was chuggin' along then all of a sudden with no warning, the engine stalled like it ran completely out of fuel!...And thats exactly what it done. (and I just filled it up to the top with diesel!)

I happened to glance down to the left of the tractor and saw diesel pouring everywhere, coming from the fuel filter. I took a farther look and found the problem. The glass sediment bowl had completely broke into!!

Have yall ever heard of this happening??

The only thing I could think of is that the left front tire may have thrown up a rock and hit the bowl. I don't know what else it could be...

My main concern is how am I gonna get all the air out of the injectors!! The fuel tank that I had just filled up, is now completely dry!! I changed the fuel filter back in March of 08'. I never had to crack ANY injectors or bleed ANY lines.

If there is anything good that came out of this situation, we managed to find a few empty cans and saved most of the diesel. Also, I was just fixing to change the fuel filter next weekend! But, it looks like it'll get done a week earlier.

Thanks for any and all comments,
Travis R

I used to deal with quite a few of these glass type sediment bowls and all of the broken ones were either hit with something or chipped and then over tightened.

I agree. I can see how over tightening would/could cause the bowl to break. But mine has been on there since 3/30/08 and the fuel filter wasn't leaking at all. I have always kept an eye on that.

Your Operators Manual covers recovery from running out of fuel.

Fill tank
Turn valve on fuel filter to "Air".
Allow air bubbles to drain.
Turn valve to "On".

Hello Travis. I have a 135 massey and had the same thing happen a few years back while bushoging. Bush hog apparently threw a rock and broke glass bowl. I took the filter and the bottom piece and bolt to NAPA and got the parts guy to find me a filter the right length that would work. I put it back together with new "O" rings, cracked lines at the pump and fired it up. I had intended to buy a new glass bowl, but this works just fine. Also now have a larger filter.
