We finally got fed up with the battery in our 790 leaking and tearing apart the battery housing. I've done quite a bit of reading here and just recently did a search on this topic but I've still got a question.

If I'm correct the Optima Redtop 75-25 would be a good choice for replacement. Am I correct? Also, does anyone know of a good online source for this battery? I've looked at Optima's website and looked up the local dealers. However when I went into most of these places they had absolutely no clue what I was asking for. I got kind of fed up with it and if there's a good online source I'd love to hear about it.

We've taken the old battery out and are in the process of cleaning and repainting the damaged areas. All we need now is the replacement. Thanks for your help. Much appreciated.

I went thru that same thing last year. Pulled the whole front end apart, cleaned and painted everything. The dealer got me a new bottom tray under warrantee.

I got one of the plastic battery boxes from TS. My battery finally gave up the ghost Saturday. When I pulled it out, there was a bunch of acid water in the bottom of the box, but all the metal looked good. I think the original battery is a real POJ. I got a replacement today. It's a JD because they prorated my old one and it only cost me $18, but this one appears to be a "normal" battery instead of a vent cap on each cell, so I'll see how it goes.

If I new an Optima would last "forever", I'd get one, but with my current setup, it's not causing me any pain, so I'm willing to settle for a more "disposable" priced battery.

I didn't get 3 years out of mine. Went with a better NAPA model and new terminals a couple of years ago. So far, so good.
After checking out this thread, definitely going to look into a plastic box.

I've currently run into the same problem with the OEM JD Strongbox. This weekend I cleaned up the tray and plan to replace the battery with an Optima D51R. I looked at them on Friday and there about $147 at Advance Auto. Shouldn't be to hard to figure out a way to secure it onto the OEM tray, the dimension's are very similar.

That seems a little salty. Replaced mine with an interstate and have been happy. Optima is a gel type battery? Holds up better to vibration?

Yes it is a gel type and so far, so good, 5 years now and going strong.

I now have three Red Top Optima's and three blue top Orbital batteries, have bought 5 Orbitals (bit cheaper than Optima in Oz) but two have expired.
Both my fault, one charging with a charger (don't do that anymore) and one fell out of my Cushman's battery tray and something must have come adrift inside. I don't clamp any of my batteries down as they're constantly swapped between tractors, truck, grape harvester etc.

Interesting that some of you are having such difficulties. I'm on only the third Sears Diehard in my 755, which I bought new back around 1991. I did have to shim the hold down with a block of wood (does that make me a Yankee red-neck?), but no complaints about battery performance or longevity.

I have a 2007 JD 3720 with about 140 hrs and haven't had any trouble with battery leakage (watch it close). However, I also have a 2008 JD 4320 with about 90 hrs and it started leaking battery acid around 75 hrs. JD replaced the battery with a vent tube and the radiator as acid was sucked into the radiator from the fan. They also cleaned up the battery area and repainted it, all under warranty. Not happy about having the problem :( but am happy with warranty covering all plus transportation to/from the dealer :).

I had an old Ford F-350 that the batteries were eating the inner fenders out on, so I grabbed some stainless steel and made a quick pan/holder for the batteries.Durn stuff is still in great shape, after all these years (stainless is overkill, but I had it).
Boat battery boxes are often a good source of plastic boxes for batteries, for those looking.
