What insurance do you carry on your trailer?

You need insurance on your trailer if you lend it to someone. Your auto insurance covers your trailer while you are towing it but it does not cover a trailer that is not registered in your name.

Another good reason to never loan it out.

I pay Farm Bureau about 40 bucks a year for theft/etc. on my horse trailer but have nothing extra on my dump trailer. When I think about it, it should be the other way around since my horse trailer often as not sits while I use my dump regularly.

This is how I explain it to my clients
If a trailer is pulled by an insured vehicle that is on a personal auto policy in IL it has limits extended from the truck pulling it know matter who owns the trailer. But if you let your buddy borrow your trailer and he gets in an accident with your trailer you will not have any liability protection unless you have a liability policy on your trailer, which runs about $10 to $30 per year.

His insurance company will defend him up to his policy limits but not you.

Commercial or business vehicles should have all trailers listed on the policy or rider to add non-owed/hire trailers
Comp and collisions applies no matter which policy you have and home owners will only pay $500 for trailers.

A lesson from hurricane IKE.
A tree took out our 5th wheel which was covered by ins. no problem. But it was covered under its own policy not our home owners. The two kayaks I had mounted on top of it were not covered. Since the kayaks were not part of the trailer they were not covered under its policy and since they were not in an enclosed building they were not covered under the home owners. (a little detail unkowned to me). Upon further examination, my tractor & gooseneck are not covered under the home owners if not in an enclosed building. The lean-to that the tractor was under did qualify but it got hammered as well. (the tractor was unharmed), however the gooseneck has always sat outside.
The moral of this story: You may be covered by the tow vehicle policy while on the road, but without its own policy, if a tree falls on the trailer with no one around to hear, you'll still might be crying.

You really need to go speak with YOUR insurance agent, and get it in writing.

As another gentleman pointed out, it is often different if your truck is tagged commercial or private, and it varies state to state.

If you go back and search a bit you will find where I ranted and raved about not being happy with my agent after thinking as many folks in this thread have stated, and as a matter of fact as my agent had stated, that my trailers were covered, and when I went to add a new truck, they asked if I intended to pull trailers and I would need a seperate policy for each :( Needless to say I was less then happy to realize that for 4+ years I had been pulling trailers daily with the business truck, and they had been uninsured. There is also somewhat of a grey area when the trailer comes detatched from the towed vehicle.

My 4 trailers are insured on riders for the commercial policy covering both truck for about $60 a year (just liability)

They carry the full insurance of the towing vehicle when pulled behind my private vehicles.

Talk with YOUR insurance agent, in your state, and then make him show it in writing, and have him write notes, or sign yours to clarify any questions you have.

I would HATE to need it and think I had it and not have it.

We have Allstate for house, cars and the trailer. Trailer is a 7000# car hauler. Costs about $40.00 a year. Liability is covered by the tow vehicle.

I do not personally like my insurance agent very much and would drop him if I could get better rates. However each time I check with other companies I am currently getting the best deal from Allstate, so I stay.

And don't let this thread turn into an insurance bashing thread. Everyone gets a different rate, experience, etc... with all insurance companies. That's why you shouldn't get Allstate because they are giving me good rates or the company with the lizard, or minuteman or Ben Franklin, etc... you have to check each and every company and agent yourself.
