considering toolcat or powertrac 1460. checking for info on mowing with pt and 90 inch deck. 40 acres to mow mostly open level fields, and how would pt do driving on gravel road to fields about 10miles , i like pt price compared to toolcat thanks

40 acres sounds like a lot of mowing for anything but a dedicated field mower. I expect a 1460 will do it, but keep in mind that a PT is optimized more for loading than for mowing. PT gives a lot of bang for the buck, but it's important to understand that they are not as heavy-duty as a typical Bobcat or Caterpillar type machine. Also, I would really not enjoy a 10 mile road trip on any of those machines. That's why they make trailers.

I would disagree on the mowing comment, at least for the 1800 series. I guess the 1460 would be more of a loader than a mower... But they like to mow, and the 90" mower is killer.

Upside is that it is billygoat, goes wherever you want it to. It is very flexible, does most tractory sort of things.

Downsides... Not 100% reliable, Not very comfortable. I drove mine on the highway for a couple of miles. Top speed is 8MPH. Not a lot of fun when a kid on a bike can keep up with you. Mower on the front is the best, until you do fall mowing and all the dust and junk is kicked up.

40 acres of flat sounds like a batwing sort of deal, but the 90" PT is a monster for sure.

Toolcat have a mixed record on reliablity.

Why buy an expensive machine like a high end PT, but then drive it on the road 10 miles to mow? This will waste well over an hour of your time each way just to drive there, plus add much wear and tear on the machine for absolutely no good reason. Buy a trailer. Spend a few minutes to load the PT onto the trailer to move it. It is better for the PT, and less waste of time.

Besides that, if you are commuting every few days on a PT over the road, you might want to get the PT road ready, else the cops might pull you over for an unregistered vehicle.

Finally, the virtue of the PT is its capability to do hugely many things, at a cost that it has some maintenance issues. But if you are using it for only one purpose, offsite mowing, I'd argue that you are far better off getting a high quality professional ZT machine. Still trailer it though.

Personally, I would not mow 40 acres with either of those machines. I would by a solid, used AG tractor and a very large batwing mower. See Soundguy's posts on equipment for that purpose.

Hi MossRoad,

If he means bush hogging a few times a year, i would have no problems using the 1800 series with the 90" mower. Weekly mowing would be a bit much without some huge setup like bat wings.

By the way, the site makes it sound like price increases.

Can you say suspension seat? :)

It does help a lot but you still get some bouncing around.

Ken

I have to revisit your mod. The only worry I have had is reaching the pedals You say it wasn't much of a change?

I agree with Ken. Once in a while would be great for a Power-Trac, but for very often, I'd step up to a larger Utility or AG Tractor. Also, if you just want to use it for mowing, I'd looking for a solid used PT-1850. I don't really see having a big Tractor meant for Serious Loading applications used for Rough Mowing only:p An 1850 is a more dedicated Rough Cut Mower (not to mention a serious Slope Climber) ;)

We have a John Deere 5310 Cab tractor:) with a JD 717 7' Bush Hog for it. We've had to Bush Hog some pretty large lots of land before and the 5310 is an AWSOME machine for it. A really big plus is the Cab with A/C. If you live in a really hot year round or summer climate (like here in Michigan) then I would undoubtedly get a Tractor with a Cab. With the crazy weather we have here, it's a MUST. You can also just drive it to the fields (goes 22mph) and a 5310 can pull a pretty good size Batwing mower. :)

Hope this helps!
