Tractor
Kubota L3130 JD X750 and X350
I have been in the market for a new mower for a long time now but just have not made up my mind on what to get yet. Today I came across a 2007 X700 with 62 hours on it for 7K. It has a 48" deck. Was told this was a government lease return. Very good shape. He said there will be room to haggle some since it is still off season.

I will be using this tractor for just mowing. I have about 3 acres and is all flat. I have also been looking at the X540 new at 7200.00.

Should I go used and bigger with no warranty or smaller and new.

Any feedback from current owners on how they like their X700 or X540 would help a lot.

And yes I do have a Kubota L3130.....so you die hard John Deere guys please do not hold that against me.

Thanks

I also own a Kubota GL3240 :D and I will probably go green for my lawn mowing to.

Between the X540 and the X700 the X700 is much more tractor. It has a more heavy duty hydro unit and is designed for heavy ground engagment tasks. For just mowing it is probably overkill but you can never have to much tractor, right ;)

If you are thinking about used, check this dealer out to. If you scroll down to the lower section all prices include shipping to the lower 48 states.

Either one will do the job for you.
I had an X540 and loved it. Did most everything I needed
it to do, mostly mowing. If you ever would put a
blower on it, or other attachments, you would like the X700 better. Just a heavier machine. Full hydraulics with down pressure.
On the X540, you would not have the down pressure, not that it is totally neccessary.
X700 will give you a very comfortable ride over the X540. But
again, the X540 is a very nice machine.
If it were me, I would buy the X700. With only 62 hours on
it, it is barely broke in.
I upgraded from the X540 to a 2305.

I would go for the X700 especially being as it is cheaper, try to talk the price down some though. As far as the 62 hours and being used remember any of them are used after you unload them at home. :D

The X700 is much nicer than the X540 but with 3 acres I'd prefer at least a 54'' mower with a 60'' mower being my preference.

I used to use a 73' IH Cub with a 5 ft Woods belly mower to cut 7 acres of grass. All together it consists of about 85% open, no obstructions field and it took me 8 hours to do just that, including trimming. (No trimming was about 7 hrs). That grass is cut regularly every 2 weeks, and other then 1 hill, it is completely flat.

After I got my 3320 late last summer and cut this same area a couple of times, I was able to cut 2 hours off my total cut time, (no trimming included), making it about 5 hours. Now with the 3320, yes I can cut at a slightly faster speed. But, a lot of the decrease in time was in adding a ft of cut to each pass of the mower.

Personally, either tractor you mention would be a good fit as far as power and size, but I would go with at least a 54" deck. A 62" would be the best, but you can get by with a 54". Time is money and a larger deck will noticeably decrease your total cut time.

I have had two X500 (the predecessors to your potential buy) tractors. One had the 54" and one the 62" mower. I mowed about 5 acres for my parents. There is minimal time difference between the two mowers. I expected a whopping time difference mowing, but it just is not there. There is some difference, just not much (about five minutes per acre if I recall). If you are like me, I would enjoy the additional 15 minutes that gave me on the tractor. The 48" deck is not slow and cuts well. On the X700 machine, it does not extend very far beyond the wheel width. I do not like this for trimming. Also, when these machines are sold, they generally are sold with a mower deck. The 48" deck has proven an unpopular choice with those purchasing the X700 machines, so keep this in mind for resale. As noted 62 hours on one of these commercial level tractors is really nothing. If you feel comfortable that there is nothing mechanically awry that could end you back up in the dealer frequently, I would go with the X700 series machine. They are great little tractors and are a real step up from the 500 series. My dad had a 335 which I sold to another poster in the forum. I think he still likes it. It was a great little mower (the ancestor to the 500 series) but was not the same type machine as a 700 series machine, which is larger, heavier duty and much smoother to operate.

perphaps you could haggle in a 54 or 60 inch mower in exchange for the 48 incher.

I have a 48* mower on my BX1500 and sure wish it was at least the 54'' one for that very reason .

Hey thanks everyone for the input. I have been thinking about the 48"deck and the more I think about it the 54" would be better...... next to the pond.....I could mow right up to the edge safer with the larger deck. I am hoping to go in tomarrow and check it out some more.

Thanks again
