Sorry to hear about your equine troubles. We keep horses on our farm and love them but as a hobby they are quite expensive even when healthy. Up here some people lease other people's horses to ride. They pay for the board, routine vet care and farrier, but not for the major expenses such as broken legs. The owner is responsible for big stuff. This lowers the cost somewhat and there is no intial outlay for buying the horse. Hope everbody recovers from their ordeals. -Mike

Thanks guys. It helps to vent. Helps to say all the things I'm thinking but can't say to my wife and daughter. Although I may end up having to get involved. My wife is a very smart woman but like many women at times she thinks too much with her heart and not enough with her head. I think that she is going to want me to help with this decision. Unfortunately I don't know diddly about horses. I don't know the physical extent of the fracture or what it even means to a horse (vs a human or a dog or whatever).....so I'm not going to bring much to the table. I hope the vet is a straight shooter.

All I can say, I hope it works out for everyone and the horse too.

I find peace and solace in seeing the pleasure and happiness of my wife and kids when they are around and engaging their horses. I don't know how it happens, I have no explanation. If it were up to me, the horse thing is not my thing.

I understand about other people living in the perfect horse world. Sooner or later, reality hits. One can only hope, no one, including the horse gets the bad break.

My heartfelt wishes for your endeavors and success in dealing with this and your family.

That may be an option if we lose this horse. Its common practice around here too. If we lose this horse there is no way on earth we could afford to buy another one of similar, er, price tag....

But if my daughter wants to continue doing dressage a lease may be a way to do so without breaking the bank.

I wish she would just start riding western with her little trail horse, which by the way, has worked out to be a perfectly capable cattle horse. My daughter is a good enough 'cowgirl' on Cherokee, her trail horse, that my B-I-L calls her to help whenever he has to move herds, round up calves or heifers, etc. I wish she'd just get more into that and leave this high dollar English stuff to the Gottrocks and Rockafellas.

Sorry for what you are in the middle of N80. Friend of mine has had to bury a few ,not always a graceful job. His saying is "if it has **** or tires it will give you trouble" guess horses need to be added to the list. Had an Uncle killed by a horse,I never knew him but he was kicked in the leg and got a blood infection. I never did trust horses,a machine will do what it is asked or not, but it USUALLY will not come up with its own plan that could be entirely different from what you had in mind. Good luck,Tom

Yep, that is the positive aspect of horses. She is a hard worker, very responsible and absolutely dedicated to the horses. Owning them, caring for them and riding them have been very good for her. Good for character and maturity.

We are on our second horse, buying them seems to be only the begining of the cost. We don't have an indoor arena (or any arena) so we have to board where she can ride year-round @ $550/mo. Add occasional vet calls and a farrier, you're talking real money and you're still not done. We had to get a trailer so he can (possibly) go to riding clinics or maybe shows.
I wish you luck with the leg and hope the vet is up to snuff.
