HooooBoy Look what I did now!

I posted a thread awhile ago concerning my JD 7 BH control box and it's apparent need of some work. After consulting the JD parts web page and procuring some new O rings...I started to replace what I thought was the origin of a leak and an easy fix. I was wrong.

As the pictures will show I pulled the entire control box. Not so bad for I always wanted to tear one apart (not that I know what I am doing

) but as you can see I have some metal washers that hold in the O rings at both ends of the spool. All of mine are either bent or cupped?

Called everyone and no one knows if they are to be flat or cupped.....even JD. So my only solution was to order a couple and wait to see how they look. It seems to me they should be flat. I just wondering if anyone would like to weigh in o

n this. One more thing.......new washers (two at each end) are around $3 - $4 a set times twelve that is why I only ordered two........also when I took them out......the concave side was down?????

You definitely want to remember whether the concave or convex side is down. Some of the mechanics' air tools I used to work on have concave washers and the tool will not work if you put them in backwards.

I used to design small-volume specialty mechanisms.

There are a myriad of spring washers produced by companies. They act as small-distance springs, and can be stacked to double, triple, etc. the spring force.

You need to get them in the proper orientation and the right number of them. The two notches on the one you have in the last picture indicate to me that these are not ordinary flat washers.

I can't help you now, but maybe when I get home. I have the Hydraulics Manual for the #7 backhoe. I'll take a look and let you know tonight. Cool that you are doing this, I've always been curious about what's in there. I remember the manual cautioning about the weight of the valve assembly. Is it that heavy?

WOW! the weight shocked me...........it is was 50 yards from my old storage building to my shop and I grunted all the way!

Boy that is very interesting! I thought that the washers were bent from force. Some look as though they are perfrctly cupped.......and some are wavy....maybe some do need repalced. The small secondary washer shown (the small ring) was said to be flat.......by my supplier that had some on the shelf. It is the large one that I have ordered.

Well, I'm home now looking through the Technical Manual for the Horicon Hydraulic Attachments. It shows cross section drawings but it's hard to tell the orientation of the washers. It only refers to them as washers, not springs. It does say that the six valve sections are identical however, each spool MUST be installed in the valve section from which it was removed.

It also says: "IMPORTANT: Replace all washers, backup rings and O-rings."

If it would help, I can take the manual to work tomorrow and scan the couple of pages for you. Let me know.

There is a second type of spring washer, called a wave washer. Be certain the wavy ones are deformed by use and not by starting out in life that way...

It might be time to take this down to a good shop and see what they can tell you.

By the way, Willl is right about your pictures. A lot of cameras have a macro setting, look for a drawing of a flower.
