I've been hearing alot about the Suzuki Samurai transfer case. It being a divorced unit has me interested in trying one to get a little more grunt for my anticipated tractor build.

Does anyone know what the torque capacity of these units is?

I dont know the capacity, however there are many web sights catering to Samurai's ( lots of aftermarket gears too). I'm sure one of those will know.

I have a transfer case left over from my build, if your interested?

I might be interested indeed. I guess it depends on how much it's worth to both of us...

My only alternative is to make an input shaft for the NP208 I already have. Not very attractive.

I'll let you know.

Geo Tracker and Suzuki Sidekick transfer cases are also divorced units.

Samurai
1,298 cc 1.3 liters 4 in-line front longitudinal engine with 74 mm bore, 75.5 mm stroke, 9.5 compression ratio, overhead cam and two valves per cylinder
- Unleaded fuel
- Fuel economy EPA highway (l/100km): 8.1
- Single-point injection fuel system
- 40 liter fuel tank
- Power: 49 kW , 66 HP @ 6,000 rpm; 76 ft lb @ 3,500 rpm

So approx 76 foot lbs. If your ganging transfer cases the weeker one should be in front. Samurai transfer case is all gear with aluminum housing. I still have one kicking around waiting for a project.

I'm not quite sure that is what the gear case can take, I sure hope it will take a lot more than 76ft # of torque!
I'm willing to bet it will ( think about it, a guy with a breaker bar can easily apply 76#).

Those torque and power numbers for the Sammy engine are at the
crankshaft. Torque is multiplied many times before it gets to the xfer
case or the tires.

I have an 88 project Samurai and the Xfer is tiny and very easy to
rebuild.

Ya forgot about that part, so I think 1st is about 3.65 or 4:1 so you looking at 275-300 lbs input and with 2.23 low, approx 600ft lbs output torque. I used an SJ410 T-case with 2.5 low range, though I don't think they sold that model in the USA.

Tracker/Sidekick/Vitara are NOT divorced transfer cases. You can get gear sets for both types cases. Sami is neat because changing the gear set in a Sami case changes both the high and low range.
