Thanks again everyone, like all of you who hunt with a gun, there is an element of luck involved. Scotty, I had an easier time finding the owl than my camera did! A local bird club as an email web that I have subscribed to and the bird was right where they reported it. My camera, on the other hand, likes some contrast to autofocus. Between the snow on the ground, snow in the air, and the mostly white bird the camera didn't want to fully cooperate. Had to manually focus some of the shots which I think lead to some blur. Still, very exciting to see this creature.

Great pics Rob. Is there anything you don't do well?????:D

Uh... well... gee, thanks Eric! Honestly, I don't feel like I do any things well, but am certainly not afraid to try. Right now biggest thing I'm not doing well is tolerating winter. Normally, I'm all about the four seasons and such. After plowing yet another snowfall off the drive today, I think I've had it! Bring on spring

Great photos!

What can you tell us about the camera and lens you used? I love taking nature photos and want to get a 300mm + zoom lens when then $$ is available.

Nice Rob. :)

Where was it?

You ever think of sending it in to the Trib? ;)

It's funny Dave, I send a lot of Scout pics to the Edwardsburg Argus and she runs about everything I send. I sent some to the trib several years ago and never heard a peep. I see a troop in Niles in there all the time, so I figure they must have an inside track of some sort. Ever since then, I just never think of submitting anything.

The owl has been hanging out just east of Three Oaks for a couple of weeks now. I can give you more specifics if you want.

Ah, a gear question. Just like tractors, some of us do like to talk camera gear too. I used a Canon 30D and 400mm f5.6 lens for these shots. I tried some with 1.4 and 2X teleconverters but that lens doesn't take them well. It's a great lens for nature and relatively affordable. The next jump up starts costing as much as a tractor, so it's a ways off for me. Unfortunately, for good bird shots the long lenses seem to be pretty much a requirement. I need a lot of work on my technique though, before I sink any more money into it!

Hmmm. Maybe try contacting someone in the features department for the Scout pics.

Neat birds. Wonder what brought it down here? Cheap taxes? Hahaha. There have been some bald eagle sighting on the S.J. river between Elkhart and Buchanan, too.
