I think I know what you are saying. I had the oil level higher in the short tube bit the pipe got hot enought to catch the suface of the oil on fire and then you have ash and gunk buildup problems. In that picture the oil level is just high enough to allow some airflow through the pipe to cool it. Plus the oil level over the jet be must be in the thousandths like maybe two or three, very fine control is needed. I did make one out of 3 inch exhaust pipe for a bigger pool of oil and made a heat shield over the oil with a hole for the jet and I still had stability problems. The one guy I saw making the verticle work was using a 10 inch pool of oil in a custom cast conical kind of deal.

Bernie, on your vertical, what were you using for air pressure and what size was the hole in your nozzle?

The hole is .010
I tig welded a little piece of metal over the end of a brake line then drilled it.
Broke about 5 bits till I got it right.
Air pressure varied between 30 and 60. I think for that rig it was best at about 40 or so.
