Beware of thieves

Thats not the only kind of thieves out there either. Got to be careful on CL too, lots of people out there willing to take you for a ride if they can get away with it.

See here:

WELL FOLKS I GOT TOOK! I answered an ad to a person who wanted a 6' rototiller for his tractor. I had one and emailed him and he called me. He talked a very good game and even put me off to come and see it the first time. We had several phone calls back and forth (cell phone of course) and I told him I wanted a rear tine garder tiller. He claimed to have one but wanted to make sure it worked well before he could bring it (postponed for an additional day). He finally showed up with the digger. He talked a very good game, appeared to be a good ole boy real down to earth! He was driving a late model F-250 Ford diesel (2006 or better) grey in color and pulling a blue dual axel trailer with 24" side bodies and tailgate. He claimed to be from the Belton, S.C. area. After taking the tiller off the trailer and helping him load the big rototiller, he paid me the balance of $450.00 in the form of a company check. The company was Hamiliton Equiptment Co. out of Newberry S.C. (non-existant company I have later learned!) These checks were in a 3-ring binder and looked to be legit! He is dark haired and heavy set White American! Is anybody mising a Scotts Rear tine tiller with a broken drive belt? If so I may have it! Thanks- Alan hope no one else gets taken by him!

I didn't post the CL link, I think that is frowned upon by the mod's here. I hope both of these crooks get caught.

Sounds like the Travelers in Murphy Village near North Augusta SC.

Story to tell about thieves.Had a200' power cord stolen from job site.Cost
about $800.00. Found out who stole it called police and local scrap yards
sure enough he showed up with it about noon owner did not buy.Called
police again in that district gave his name address truck description.Said they
wouldn't pick him up because i couldn't make positive id he striped the cable.
Moral of the story thieves have more rights and loop holes than honest
citizens. Framer

If this economy gets any worse there is going to be a lot of thievery happening. Curbside justice!

I don't believe this. There are thieves in this world, and there are honest people. Thieves will always steal, and honest people never will. The economy doesn't have anything to do with it.

I know how it feels.
right after veteran's day while in the process of moving from the rental to the new house someone came in, unbolted the gate from the post, pulled in with truck & trailer, and stole my century 2535, the 5' servus brush hog attached to it, and my HF quick hitch. They unhooked the loader bucket so they could winch the tractor up on the trailer, and dropped the bucket in the middle of the road on their way out towards the highway.
Insurance co didn't do me any favors with their valuation & payoff, either, but fortunately I found a dealer with a demo he wanted rid of and since it was still new I got 0%/48 mo financing to make the deal work out.

I think we should change the system and let the victems pass judgement instead of the system. thieves might look at this a little differently.

I stopped taking checks from strangers years ago. I tell them to bring cash only. They are welcome to leave a check as a deposit and I tell them to bring cash the next business day and I'll return the deposit check. It's too easy to steal, forge or make checks and money orders on a computer these days. It's just good business and most folks understand. The ones that make a big deal about it or need it now are politely told I have another buyer. Most banks are open late Fridays and Saturday mornings. It's way to easy to cash a check at their own bank than for me to worry about it.

PREDATOR, want to expound on why you selected that moniker??

I welcome you to TBN, let us know what you are doing and post questions here. :)

I must, nevertheless, observe:

You say, "Thieves will always steal, and honest people never will."

True, because the moment an honest person, for whatever reason, is driven and decides to steal, they are no longer an honest person.

I fear that I must take the position that personal desperation, which arrives via many paths... including joblessness and being broke, both of which are increasing....does, in fact, increase illegal activity, including thievery. :(

Thus deterrents and countermeasures by the honest people are increasingly indicated by the current economic climate, IMHO.:)

I agree with others...an appropriate countermeasure today is to accept CASH only... even on large purchases. The current economic situation demonstrates the folly of extending credit.....

Last year after camping season i was selling my 05-F250 and a 06 28ft. camper, i advertised them in the truck and rv trader.

I had a guy from Louisville KY that wanted them both and i sent him several pictures, he called everyday and sent up a time to be here to buy them, he drove over 150 miles to get here.

When he came and looked at them he said, I'll take them!!

Then he got out his check book and i said no, i take cash. But you can follow me to the bank and work it out there, and he said NO THANKS.

I believe he came here to load a bad one on me, but he had a long way back home, his wife never even got out of the truck to look at them.

I did end up selling them to someone else, but i told them i take cash at the bank, so they can check for those fake bills.:D

I use the name Predator because I love to hunt. I suppose it looks kind of strange here compared to a hunting forum.

Consider this: when gasoline got over $2.50 a gallon, drive-offs at gas stations increased, and stations began to require payment up front. However, I never stole any gasoline, I never even considered it. I doubt if you did either. I don't think more people became thieves, I think more people who were already thieves added gasoline to the list of things they were stealing.

I suppose a better way to phrase my opinion would be this way: There are people who obey the law, and those who disobey it. This is why I am opposed to gun control laws. I feel that if a criminal is going to commit a robbery or murder, they have already decided to break the law, and a gun control law is not going to deter them. Might as well be hung for a sheep, as a lamb.
