Car Accident and Insurance

The way I understand it. The uninsured motorist coverage is for only people ( other than you'er family) riding in the vehicle with you that may not have insurance to cover madical bills. The insurance agent & I were discussing this the other day when I raised my homeowners Liability to 1 mil $

That is not correct. I believe that you are talking about "medical payments". Your uninsured motorist insurance covers, you, your family and all occupants of your vehicle, in the event that you suffer damage at the fault of a driver who is uninsured or underinsured.

Laws may have changed since but in the 1980s my 17 year old son was a passenger on a motorcycle whose driver was uninsured and was at fault in an accident and my uninsured motorist insurance covered all his hospital bills plus pain and suffering. By the way, my insurance company told me that the insurance did not cover family members who were not in my vehicle, but my lawyer said it did, and after he spoke to the insurance company, they paid up.

I'll have to re- check on that. It may have been medical payments.... We were talking about so much stuff..

I know what you mean. It's like , I have insurance. But, most never review their policy as time goes on. What would have been enough,,, all of a sudden isn't;)

Dan I am so sorry to read about your accident. Thank God you took the action that you did. About a week after I took our son home from the hospital 27 years ago I had an accident that left me in the shape you are in. Nothing serious but lots of aches and pains and whiplash. When I went to the beauty salon I had to be very careful about how I positioned myself in the sink to get my hair washed becasue I would get a lot of pain from that old accident. It never never bothered me at all except for the sinks at the beauty salon where they ahve the cut out in the sink to lay your head back. Now within the last 6 months I am starting to at least once a day get a pain in my neck from that old injury. So what I guess I am trying to say is although it may not feel like much now you or your wife our daughter could have some small pain that comes and goes for the rest of your life becasue of this. It was the whiplash with me and I assume from what you wrote all 3 of you probably ahve whiplash as well. Don't be to quick to settle on injuries, wait and see for a year or even 2. In a few montsh ask your wife and daughter to notice when they go to get their hair washed at the salon if it bothers them.

It could be worse, thankfully you reacted in a split second as you said you could have been pushing up daisies about now. I guess the good Lord decided it wasn't your time. OR maybe you just cheated the devil ha-ha!!! iGourmet is out of our oil but you can get it in Milwaukee. We should be shipping hopefully in about 2 weeks.

Thanks Rox.

And for the info on the oil. Every spare second of time we have is being used to research what new car to get and going to the doctors. We are behind on the thank you to the couple that helped us. The accident report mentioned two witnesses one of which is the husband of the couple that helped us. I think I know who is who but I have to spend some time to find out for sure.

We did find out this week that our car would be totaled. We are waiting to here how much they are going to value the car.

Also I am talking with our insurance company due to some of the topics in this conversation that turned to liability. Looks like we can get a million dollar liability umbrella for 160-200 a year.

Good Mornin Dan,
Very sorry to hear about your accident, glad that you and your wife are OK !

I was taking my wife out to dinner back in Oct, while we where waiting at a stop light this guy slammed into the back of my wifes vehicle ! It was pitch black out and this drunk didnt even have his light on ! My wife at the time asked me what just happened, and I just looked at her and said we have been rearended by a drunk ! She says how do you know ? And I smiled and said because he didnt have his lights on !

Anyway, at the time we werent even sure if this guy had valid insurance ! We got our vehicle fixed using our insurance. I had to front the $500 deductible at the time. Well after hours of telephone calls and 4 1/2 months of waiting I finally got my $500 back. I think the term is subjigation sp? , anyway its best not to get in any accidents IMHO !:)

Dan, it was 10 years ago this month that my wife rolled our 1993 Ford Escort station wagon that I had bought new to pull behind a motorhome. I don't know how many flips she made, but she cleared a 5 strand barbed wire fence without damaging it.:D And of course at the time, we lived 25 miles from the nearest car dealers, so I did all our car shopping via Internet and telephone; didn't see the new car or a sales person until the evening I went to sign the paperwork and pick up the new car.

Dan, tha is what my hsuband and I always had when we lived int he states, it was either one or two million umbrella policy. And like you found out it really doesn't cost that much and gives you a lot of peace of mind. You never know your minor children could get in an accident that is their fault and the other party's injuries can be more than what your car insurance covers. It just makes sense, and if you want you might increase your deductible to offset some of the cost of the umbrella policy. I got my umbrella policy through my employer as at that time GE was in the insurance business. Might check with your employee insurance and see if they can offer you soemething, wouldn't hurt to ask.

On my personal vehicles I carry $200k /$500k/$500k. Sometimes I wonder if this is enough

I have $5M umbrella policy which costs $236 per year. That may sound high, but with the way awards are going up these days, it seems pretty reasonable right now. It also covers liability for anything else too.

I will ask for the cost for higher coverage on the umbrella.

We have been using the Internet and phone to shop. Our problem was settling on what vehicle to get so the wifey had to test drive the three to make a decision. Now its just a question of finding THE car at the right price. I am pretty sure it will be an Expedition. We have some sales guys looking for what we want. It will be interesting to see what happens. :)

We looked at new cars for grins and giggles. No surprise that the car companies have money problems. They surely are not pricing like one would expect for companies with large inventories. This week some of the dealers were advertising $12,000 off some vehicles. But alot of the new cars list at 40-45K or even higher. :D

Dan
