I am installing a new engine on a rototiller that I was given. The exact engine is no longer available since the tiller was built in 1985 but there is a replacement that will fit. However the belt length will be different. Anybody have an idea on figuring out the length of a belt if it is not known?

Gday get a tape measure and wrap around pulley's and under idler to give you total length then subtract 3'' for 'a' section belt or 4'' for 'b' section belt:)

It is unclear whether that calculator gives outside length or pitch length. The ouside length needed in your system should be easy to measure with a tape that spans the pulley grooves. Then just pick a belt with that outside length or the next higher inch for some slack on the idler tightener.

Put the rotortiller in the back of your pickup, drive to NAPA, try different belts at the store, buy the one that fits. That's my suggestion.

i just did a quick test and that calculator appears to give the outside length.

All good suggestions. You can use the string method to get in the ballpark and then take the tiller to your local store to find the correct one.

A dressmaker's measuring tape could also be used to get in the ballpark.

Took me about 3 tries to get a belt to fit my tractor like this. I was so sure I had the right measurement each time, too.

Got it. Thanks to all for the suggestions. Here is what I ended up doing. Seemed simple. (ya right ) Since the new belt was going to be a little shorter than the original, I cut it and wrapped the belt around and over lapped it, marked it, and measured it. I for got to allow for the distance it would need to go over the pulleys. Back to the auto store. Add an inch. Wrong, to much slack. Back to the auto store. Only add 1/2 inch. Fit nicely.

3 trips just like 2manyrocks said. :D :D :D
