You do not have to run at "PTO Speed". It's a good idea to not over load the engine though. I personally do not like reving the engine to max RPM's when it's not required.

What's the engine rpm that's required to produce 540 rpm at the pto?

There is usually a mark on the tach for 540 PTO speed.

I also engage my PTO very slowly at idle and then slowly ( about 5 seconds) bring it to PTO speed.

I also go for the "feather the PTO in" process. At about 1500 RPM I SLOWLY engage the PTO until fully engaged. Then I raise the throttle until my dash gauge reads 540 PTO (Grand L 3940 digital dash readout).
Then it's "turn and burn" :D

When using a bush-hog, i have my throttle as low as it will go when i turn on the PTO.

Then i will slowly increase the throttle to the RPMS that are needed for the job. If i am cutting tall grass then i will run my RPMS in the 540 mark.

If i am cutting short grass, weeds etc... i will run slower RPMS as long as its getting the job done.

I always run mine at 540 RPM no matter what.. I enguage mine at idle or 300-500 engine RPM'S

If you want to shorten the life of a deisel engine run it at a lower speed that is designed to run . Will not hurt to run engine at speed the PTO is designed to run . Is realy better for it keeps colling fan and engine oil working . These engines tend to over heat when pulling a load at lower RPM's. Also the emplement is designed to work at that RPM and it will NOT do a good job at a lower RPM. If you are going to fast in the gear drop one.

On my JD4300HST when you pull the PTO lever it INSTANTLY engages, no way to do it gently. The same when you disengage. I normally pull the lever at idle then rev it up.
My old Bota had a two speed PTO so I could run the mower at a high speed but lower engine speed if the load was light. I could also use the clutch to engage/disengage the PTO, even though it also had HST

Especially with a "bush hog" you need to engage the PTO at a low speed or the blades will backspin and clack together when the carrier starts turning.

I have had mine go together, and have to find a place where i could back up with the bush hog hanging over a bank, so i could see under it better, then try to get them loose.

It is a good idea to lower the engine rpm and let the clutch out slooooowly when engaging the PTO, or you may break the shear pin....don't ask me how I know.
