We come across an old homemade 3 point log splitter and we are using a 16 hp. B&S propane motor w/ an unknown hydraulic pump. We "rigged" up some quick connectors to this unit and ran it for a day it worked real good then the leaks started. So we replaced the hoses and the control valve a Speeco Spool valve from a farm store. We hooked everything up and now when the vavle is in the neutral position the motor/pump seems to build pressure and starts to squeal. I was wondering if these valves are adjustable by removing the allen/machine screws on the rear of the valve or will I have springs and ball bearings flying out all over the place? Also I was wondering if a spool valve and a detent valve are the same or??? When I hooked the splitter to my Massey 65 it seemed to operate fine, although I did notice when the valve was in the neutral position it seemed to have some pressure on the tractors hyd. system.
If anyone has any info or input I'd greatly appreciate it,Thanks.

On most log splitters the valve is open when in the neutral position (open center) - because you will have oil passing through the valve and not going to the cylinder - the oil just returns to the reservoir. Your valve sounds like it is a closed center valve. Your pump is still pumping oil and the fact that the valve is closed is causing a pressure build up. You need an open center valve.

If this is already an open center valve then it must not have enough capacity for your pump. I suppose it is possible that when in the center position, there is not enough flow getting through the valve. If so, I think you will have to purchase a larger flow valve or some how reduce the flow from your pump.

Yep...sounds like you bought a closed center valve. Google the specs on it to be sure.

It's Speeco Spool Valve 1 Open Log Splitter that's suppose to have an open center? I wonder if there are any adjustments or get a refund?

Is this it?

Should work, 'out of the box', unless your pump is pushing too much fluid as mentioned! I run a simular valve on mine, but I've only got a 5hp and small two-stage pump. What happens if you slow down the engine to decrease flow? ~S

3/4" pressure and tank ports should be good. I'm wondering about the QDs.....they will restrict flow!!
Pull them out of the circuit and try it again.

Yeah it was my fault they had two Models C-908 and a C-909 right next to each other on the shelf without looking I bought the C-909 closed. Now I wonder what I can do to change this over because the store will probably not issue a refund because it was used and painted. So I am wondering if I can drill, machine or swap any parts from the old to the new?
BTW I appreciate your help.

I don't think your going to be able to "modify" it to be open-center.

There are ways to work around this but they are all cases of throwing good money after bad.
I think it is a matter of selling that valve and getting the right one. Someone with a closed center tractor can use it.

In good faith I bet if you take it back and by humble, tell them you picked up the wrong one, they may be forgiving and give you the right one in exchange or for a small restocking fee.
