Tractor
Still looking but will probably go green
Well, I am new also. Have been lurking a while, but since I am new to the whole tractor thing, I haven't posted because I have little knowledge and advise. But I could use yours.
Went to an auction today. 10 year old 4700 JD Hydro sold for 14,200.00 I was in at 14,100 and dropped because the tractor had 5000 hours, hydro was out of adjustment and it smoked a bit when running. All I could see was new transmission or rebuild coming, Rebuilt motor coming and the wife complaining.
So I passed and decided to return home and research some more. Found a 4105 model that is looking good. I really dont need the 4700 size and the 4105 isn't that much smaller in my opinion. Then you see a 4400.
So here is the delimina: price IS a factor. I wanted to stay below 15K and would really like to be around 12K. I have seen a couple 4400 tractors with loaders and hydro (two gotta haves) at under 15K. But I can buy a NEW or almost new 4105 for 20K. What are you guy's thoughts? The extra 5k is going to come from my building fund if it has to. Just setting back my building plans for a bit, but it would mean a new tractor.

Personally I would prefer new with warranty or a very low hour demo with warranty. Tractors are tough but they can be abused and repairs can add up quickly to big $$$.

That said I think the trick is to realistically determine your usage, your patience for time a given job takes to perform with the tractor and your mechanical aptitude in maintaining the tractor and then find a good deal that meets those criteria.

Open up the brands you are willing to look at.

I would rather have a new Kioti or Mahindra, with a warranty, than a 10 year old JD with no idea of its real maintenance history.

Just my opinion.

I am New to attempting to join the tractor family as well and feel the same way concerning buying new or used, I would lean towards "new" as well ( I am facing the same challange and concerns ) The Pros to buying New is service and warrantee, which brings peace of mind. The Con is $5000-$6000 more than what you want to pay, but if you buy used and have any of those issues you are concerned about happen, then you could burn that $5000-$6000 in no time in repairs. Not to mention the aggrivation, hassel and dissapointment.
There is attractive financing out there right now, so I would keep that in mind. Some offer 0%...can't beat that.

Hope all turns out well for you in whatever you decide.

Just me but a $5K delta is way too little especially considering the financing that is available for a new tractor. In my opinion the financing, warrantee, zero hours and knowing how it's been maintained/abused is worth more than that.

Welcme to tbn. Didn'T say what you going to use primarily for? But if you are
new to tractors buy new like many have advised for many reasons. One is
if you not sure what or size you can usually trade with out huge difference.
Good luck. Framer

Well, I made the jump. I read a bunch of threads and was leaning towards a new 4105 Deere. Until a nearly new SAME Solaris 40 fell into my route. 40hp, same exactly as a deutz agrokid 220 (40 PTO power) with loader for less than 10K. I bought it and will post up some pictures.

As far as use, I will be putting in some food plots, mowing and just all around tractor stuf on 40 acres of various grades of real estate.
