Don't have any before pics but it was a rusted mess. I paid $175, hauled it home and have been doing some painting and parts replacement. The folks at Herd were very helpful and sent me the few parts I needed. I have a few things to do with it yet but it's just about ready to begin seeding for me. I will not use any fertilizer in it. Herd builds them solid and I was pleasantly surprised as to how well built it is.

I have an "opportunity" to share the use of one that looks very similar.
The deal is that I put a bit of work into it, in particular fixing the gate.
The owner was on the edge of selling it to me, but now thinks he want to keep it for spreading sand (& probably salt).

Is the gate a simple and inexpensive little sub assembly that I could just buy and swap out, or would I have to re-build it one little spring, latch, pawl, etc at a time ?

I bought a new gate for my M-96. All the parts are available and fairly reasonable. Herd is very helpful just give them a call.
