I didnt want to hijack kossetx's drill thread, but has anyone used an old 12volt cordless drill and converted it to run "corded" from a vehicals 12v power?

I havent seen a new 12v drill in years so the old drills should be a dime a dozen with a box of dead batterys.

That should work no problem if you don't mind dragging around a very heavy battery. It would run a long time on a vehicle battery.

Just get a cig lamp plug and adapter and 20' of zip cord..run it from the ca.. or from open hood with bat clips.. or from a carry-around motorcycle battery..etc.

I have an old 12 volt drill that I did as someone else suggested with -- soldered a cigarette lighter plug to and hooked it up:D -- works fine

I did that with my old Crafstman after I couldent get batteries for it.

I took the battery pack apart holes some heavy lamp cord to were the batteries were and drilled a hole for wire to come out.

I'v only used it 2 or 3 times that way but it dose work.

btw I did fuse it at about 10 amps in one leg of the wire.

there is a youtube hack video on it but the drill was delta

.

There's also a guy on e-bay who sells individual batts and instructions to rebuild your bad batt pack. You'll have to do a search though, bec I can't remember his name.

Id only use it on vehical, I never like the cig plugs but that might be the best option. I dont even own a single cordless tool. I used many at work and they all died at the worst time, and bats are ussually to expensive to have more than 2.

If I come across a 12v drill I might do this. I suppose a 14v would work too?

My 12V driill is still operational but old enough that the batteries are no longer available. I took the exhausted battery pack to my local Battery Plus store and they rebuilt the pack. Picked it up the next day and it's as good (or better) than new - can't even tell how they opened it to put in new cells. I also have a 18V drill & circular saw that I use for heavier work but that old drill is convenient for small quick jobs.

I work with a guy who uses a 12volt Dewalt at work. He likes the 12volts because if the battery ever dies he can hook up a set of jumper leads to the cigarette lighter and charge the battery in transit. 15 or 20 minutes later he is back up and running.
