I was talking to a contractor who owns a Brushcat and a Loftness flail. He said the flail needs more maintenance and the flail action produces fine dust that clogs up the filtering system of his Bobcat T250 that necessitates daily cleaning. Has any one else had this problem with a flail mower? This concerns me, since trubo's are vulnerable to particle contamination.

That is why you have air filters. You may have to clean the primary filter more often, I don't know first hand though. All that I have ever used is a flail and have had no problems with dust. I don't have anything else to compare to. I have not read that this was ever any more of a problem than with a rotary cutter.

......oooooooooo.......you've have bashed the holy flail!

i love my flail.....knives are bit more maint. and maybe a belt every 20 years but that's about it.....

extra dust....some flails have a rubber flap that shoots everything to the ground.........i made a lot of dust when i was cutting too low and tilling the ground...

i wouldn't worry about it.......what are you wanting to do with a flail.....

Every cutter I've ever used produces a god-awful amount of dust if set low in very dry conditions. Especially if it has "mulching" blades that create a lot of suction.

I planned on using a skidsteer mower to clear and maintain 40 acres of brush and grass. A rotary cutter, like the Brushcat is generally fine for the initial clearing, but I was hoping to obtain a cleaner cut for long term maintenance applications, by going with a flail.

I could not imagine mowing 40 acres with a skid loader unless yours rides a whole lot better than any I have ran. My fillings would fall out and I would be passing blood.

I have had the same dust experience with the loftness when cutting really dry Southern california brush. I used a cat 279 track machine on steep slopes and it works great. If I were doing it all the time I would look into an automatic reversible fan to help clean the radiator fins too.

I like you would like to get a better finish on my cutting jobs. I use a brush monster rotary cutter that I have cut 4" plus brush and trees. I use it on my T190 and on lighter cutting I use my toolcat. I can tell you that I have to stop and clean the radiator on both machines often when it is very dry. We are in a drought here. It stands to reason that if the flail cuts finer that the chaff produced would be greater in volume. I think that this would be a necessary trade off to get the finish you want. I cut a stand of salt cedars recently and I would have liked to have a finer cut product. I had to remove debris left over from Hurricane Ike and I think that a finer cut would have meant less haul off.

If you rented a tracked forest slash flail mower you would be years ahead on your desire to clear off this property
as the tracked forest flail mowers will do this quickly and then you could simply buy a big tractor with a flail mower with scoop knives if desired as the tracked forest slash mower will mow every thing to the sod.

If he is complaining about his flail maintenance he is not doing something he should be doing to maintain his flailmower like traveling too fast for conditions, leaving the mower raised while mowing, not checking his bearing hubs for debris, mowing with dull blades or hammers, not greasing the mower or V belt pulleys, or not having the rear roller adjusted for the desired height of cut.

Iron Horse has excellent results with his flailmowers in Australia and the work he does with it is much harder on machines in native vegetation.

As far as a precleaner for a turbo charger goes you need to invest in an
"Mann" brand oil bath precleaner for your mowing tractor that also has a
paper air filter cartridge.

The addition of a turbo precleaner to the oil bath precleaner reduces
pre- filter filter loading by a huge amount as the oil bath air cleaner
by it self removes 95 percent or more of the dirt entering an engine where in the
filter mesh in the post filter removes the lighter particles before they enter paper filter and then
engine air intake.
