Its a lot speedier to just raise tiller as you get to end, with it running, pto still engaged, turn around[hopefully without having to backup],than just crank throttle back up and slowly lower.Never changing gears, never clutching.

Thanks Greenmule. I'll keep that in mind as my experience and tilling jobs both grow in size. Right now my garden is just a quarter acre in size, and tilling slowly helps me get a feel for how everything works. But its good to know how to get the job done faster.

There might be a synthetic component to the gear oil you bought. The "never dry" paint that KK used could also be the problem.:D

Yup, could be some of both. Maybe that KK paint is oil-based, which I've heard can take a lot longer to dry. Dunno.

Mine also has weak paint. King Kutter implements just plain have bad paint jobs end of story.

I have mine set up leaning slightly forward when down. I pick up with the tiller running to turn around. I just be careful of the hieght I lift. I have had no problems.

That's a good area. I used to be south of there near Bluefield, but these days I'm farther to the northeast, near the little town of Petersburg.

I'm coming to think the same thing about that KK paint job. Guess I'll have to plan to redo it with my own paint some day.

Thanks for the description of your setup. Mine is leaning forward now, but probably too much so. I'll try backing it off some and see if I have any of the issues Greenmule mentions when lifting with keeping the PTO in gear.

I run my 48" KK II more like photo two. I had the same issue when the top link was extended in that the tiller didn't really work in. This was more problematic when I hit rocks, which I have an abundance of unfortunately. Tiller bounced wickedly. With the tiller rotated forward more it settles in nicely.

The clutch adjustment is very important. I got a bit anxious and used mine before adjusting the clutch. Stopped the tractor cold twice and I was a bit concerned that I may be at risk of damaging the PTO drive. I adjusted the cluth and boy you know when you've got a rock locked in there - the tractor groans, when that clutch slips, but that's the signal to hit the clutch and raise the tiller. Works great. I'm tilling a quarter acre garden that still has some rocks but this tiller can handle it. I have noticed a number of dings in the tiller from rocks, but what the hey. I used to till this with a walk behind simplicity 16". That was more than this ol' body could handle. Now I use the Simplicity to till between the rows and hope the KK took care of the bigger rocks.

All in all, when the tiller is set up right, as noted earlier in this thread, it's a terrific tiller.

The instructions for my Land Pride tiller recommend setting the pitch like in your second photo. :p

i don't consider those skid plates to be depth adjusters: i think they are gear box an bearing protectors: they sink into the ground pretty deep after the first pass or so.
