Bmac,
Nice looking run, is it covered over the top too?

Thanks, Toro. Yeah, the top is covered with regular chicken wire. I used 48" wide rolls. Then placed 2x4 "joists" every 4 feet or so to support the seams.

The first thing the guineas will eat is those boxwoods out the front door of your coop. The next thing will be any flowers you have planted around your house. After they've gotten those pests under control, then they'll start on your ticks.

Shawn,

You surprised me with this warning. Everything I've read about guineas is how wonderful they are for gardeners as they eat the bugs, but don't destroy the plants (unlike chickens). This is the first I've read about them eating the landscaping.

I do have concerns about them flying into the fenced-in back yard and getting eaten by the dogs. I guess we'll find out soon enough. Thanks for the heads up on this.

If you were closer I'd give you mine to play with. As soon as the eggs hatch that the guinea hen is sitting on now I'm going to get rid (hopefully sell) all of them and concentrate on chickens. The guinea experiment was fun, but has become frustrating.

I think this is going to be what we need to do at my brother in laws in order to get the thing safe. There are enough trees overhead that I think they are dropping in from above. But with a 40'x35' run, that much chicken wire will get expensive, not to mention the extra work with adding supports. Not sure that is going to happen.

About 2002 or so two of my neighbors bought 75ish Guineas. They lasted about 18 months before the coyote(s), foxes, owls and hawks had finished them off.

The last Guineas I saw were very skittish and nervous.:D:D:D

The also make a lot of noise. LOUD Noise.

One of the neighbors let the Guineas think that the garage was their roost. The mess was horrible.

The Guineas got kicked out of the garage so they hung out on the front porch. The mess was horrible.

The Guineas have longs since gone and have not been replaced. I hear they are good for going after bugs in the garden but the noise issue is enough for me to just say no. :D

Later,
Dan

The noise from my 3 is not so bad. I can imagine that 75 would be maddening. They are dumb, but maybe not any moreso than chickens. It's just that guineas can fly much better and can get into trouble that chickens cant get into.

That's a BIG run to cover. Mine is only 12' x 16' so it was a manageable task.

I'm beginning to think I may want to forego the guinea experiment. I was going to start with only 10 or so. I guess if I lost them at the rate Dan's neighbor did, I'd be free of them in about 3 months (with any luck).:)
