Backhoe 3pt vs. frame mount backhoe

And after looking at that picture I decided to include a thumbnail.
That picture alone makes me leery of even Kubota's hardened toplink 3 point solution.

Call me crazy........ but isn't that casting broken from using a logging winch?

OK - your crazy :)

I just linked the picture - like I wrote I think this qualifies as a candidate for Myth Busters. Let them see if the can break up a CUT by using a backhoe!

I had a 3 point mounted 4672 on my B7800. It seemed pretty sturdy, I think the 3 point mount and the b series is a pretty good match. I would like some actual information on that picture. We don't know what he was doing or how the tractor was used to cause that damage. I don't know how many 3 point hoes there are from different manufacturers but it still seems like a low number of failures. Would I buy a 3 point mounted hoe for a large TLB no. Would I buy one to use every day to dig with no. Would I worry about it for occasional homeowner use nope.

I had a bushhog 662 on a B6200 Kubota on the 3 pt hitch and did a lot of backhoeing with it with never any problems, that said though, I now have it mounted on a subframe and wouldn't have it any other way now, it is actually easier to hitch & unhitch and just my opinion I believe that they are much stronger, and easier on the tractor on a subframe. Have not owned a 3PH or a subframe mounted backhoe but feel the sub frame would
be more stable and there would be less chance of damage to the tractor.
Would like to know if anyone has had experience with 3ph backhoes on the older heavier tractors such as the Fordson, Ford 5000, MF 65, 165, or 135.

Yeah, that picture keeps cropping up...it's the ONLY one I've ever seen (aside from cracks associated to defects at the foundry) of a broken casing. It's a picture that's been here forever and was caused by an improperly run winch...NOTHING to do AT ALL with a BH!!!!! Old argument brought up again. Yeah subframes are better, but I've thrown all I can at my B4672 3pt and it's never missed a beat! I have no use for a subframe, lowers the clearance and for what I need a BH for, very overkill. With a PROPERLY installed top link, I'd actually like to see what would cause anything on the machine to actually break!

I realize this is an old thread, but what I saw might interest someone considering a 3 pt. backhoe.
I was at a dealer a few months ago and there was a customer trying out a new L39 TLB. He had just brought his L2800 to the dealer for an estimate on repair. He had busted out a big chunk of the rear casting using a 3 pt. backhoe on it. His L2800 was out of warranty.
Funny thing was, the salesman I was talking to said that this was the second time he did the exact same thing to the L2800; the first time, Kubota repaired it under warranty. Seems like he would have learned his lesson !
After I looked at the big ( 6"x 6" ) hole in the rear of this guys L2800, what really surprised me was how thin the casting was. It seemed no thicker than 1/4" !
Just my guess, but I'll bet most of the older tractors have castings twice that thick or more.
At any rate, I know I'll never consider putting a 3 pt. hoe on any tractor of mine; just too risky in my opinion.
