Backhoe Backhoes: Side-shift VS Stabilizer

Hello all.



Here in Europe almost all brand tractor backhoes are the Side-shift type and the Stabilizer type goes mostly for export. For example the Mazzotti MAF series backhoe have a backhoe called MAF-USA witch is with stabilizers, and the one for Europe market is Side-shift.

I think i would prefer with stabilizers, wider stans = more stability

What is your opinion?

My understanding is that side shift models have vertical path stabilizers. What you refer to as a stabilizer style is called a center pivot hoe here in North America, the few times a distinction is made. Center pivot hoes have radial path stabilizers, and are with very few exceptions, all one sees this side of the pond. Ford, and now New Holland do not offer side shift models here; only center pivot.

I noticed the European backhoes are like that and wondered why. Could it be for transportation resriction? are roads narrower than here?

I think the wider stance would be a big selling point. Must be a reason for the difference.

Ford did have a 752 Side-Shift Backhoe in the mid-60's. It used a Cessna Rotary Cylinder for the Swing, as did some earlier Massey center pivot backhoes.

I noticed the European backhoes are like that and wondered why. Could it be for transportation resriction? are roads narrower than here?

I think the wider stance would be a big selling point. Must be a reason for the difference.

Good point there, our town street a very narrow because the are very old, many hundreds of years old. So maybe thats one of the issues why Euro Backhoe loaders uses Side-shift.
But all the tractor backhoe attachments are also side-shift, cant remember that i have ever seen any agri tractor with backhoe on a town construction site ever

One strange thing i have noticed is that the side-shift type has more bucket break out force then the center pivot type. As i mentioned the Mazzotti backhoe. The MAF 180 for tractors up to 30 HP, the MAF 180 side-shift has a break out force at 3970 Ibs - MAF 180 USA (center pivot) 2204 Ibs

The nardi backhoe: Side-shift 2890 Ibs Center pivot 2450 Ibs

The other specs as reach etc etc is the same.

And one of my main concerns is ground clearance, i will buy a 25-30 range tractor with R4 tires, with the euro style backhoe the ground clearance seems like be minimum.

Or do you mean the narrow roads may prevent them from extending their stabilizers down - and out.

In Australia we have, in the past, had both stabilizer systems offered.
Now it is exclusively ( I think) vertical stabilizers/sideshift hoes offered.

I think they're just more versatile.

We don't have too many options here. It is interesting that the breakout forces are higher with vertical shaft...Mmmm, what is the story?

When I'm doing the rare dig off to the side it seems the wider stabilizer would be better..but only then. Oh well, I have what I have.

To be able to dig alongside a building, as an example, one must set up a center-pivot backhoe at an angle. This requires a fairly wide space alongside the building to accommodate the length of the T-L-B and the space it occupies. The side-shift, when the digging elements are shifted fully to the side, can set up parallel to the building thus requiring less space alongside the building. Further, both stabilizers can be deployed on the side-shift while only one can be deployed on the center-pivot (the one on the building side remaining in transport position. Given the foregoing, the side-shift will be able to do more work and fully utilize the backhoes capabilities.
