Caught a SKUNK

OK, well now I've got a skunk problem too, I think. About 5 days ago, I found the dirt dug out under the slab of my barn, right in one corner of the building. I filled it back in as best I could with rock and dirt and for 4 days now nothing has tried to dig it out again, either from the inside out, or the outside in. I thought I had the problem solved until this morning when I went out to feed our cows. I immediately saw where a new hole had been dug under the barn slab, this time on the opposite side of the corner of the barn from where the first hole was. From where it's dug, I'm sure this new hole can join the old hole under the slab, since they're so close together.

Anyhow, instead of going to TSC and buying a live trap and then shooting the critter I believe will be a skunk, I ordered some of that "Critter Repellant" advertised here on TractorByNet and I'll let you know how it works.

Three nights ago the smell of a skunk spraying was so bad in the backyard area of our house that it darn near made me gag. One of our 4 dogs that was out in the yard at the time, had a very small bit of spray on the end of his nose too. I know we were lucky it wasn't much worse with 4 of our dogs in the yard.

One other trick I've heard Chuck, is to spray the skunk with a hose. When they're cold from the water they can't spray. Disclaimer: I've never tried, nor seen this trick in use so proceed at your own risk.

Maybe you could wet him down then get the blanket over him?

Maybe just throw a wet blanket over him?

I've also heard that if you grab them by the tail and yank them off the ground the weight of their body hanging down keeps them from lifting their tail and they cannot spray you. Anyone wanna try that?

I was just going to say that the tarp trick works but PILOON beat me to it. The tarp is great for two reasons: he won't spray and it gives you a sense of security knowing that it won't get on you if he did. Both the drowning and "lead poisoning" thing (.22) will work but if you're the kind that likes to "relocate" wild critters then you could drive a few miles away & open the door and wait for him to come out. If you do that I'd appreciate it if you would not come around NE Seminole county Oklahoma and do it!:D I will say that after a battle with them a few years ago it's either them or me! Good luck!

Please do not transport that skunk and release it somewhere else. The reason is the possible spread of rabies. Even if the skunk is not acting like he has rabies he could be a carrier.

Shoot him in the ear with a .22 and you wont get sprayed. Kills them without even a whimper.

OK I went over this thread yesterday and all the while I kept thinking about the skunk that has been giving my wife the scare for over a year now out in the barn. We do have 2 barn cats. Well I went out last night to bust a round bail and when I round the corner on the tractor there the little bugger is, in the middle of the drive way. I dont think anyone in history has ever found the "R" so fast. I backed off a ways just to watch this thing and every 4 or 5 steps he would fall over like he was dead. After about the 3rd time he did this I made up my mind to shoot the thing. I had a choice of the 12,20 or 4-10 so I got the 4-10 out and couldnt find the shells for it so the 20ga had to work. I got within 15 foot and killed him with one lucky shot to the head. Put him in the FEL and buried him at the back of the pasture. This thing was sick but he wasnt foaming at the mouth like they say they do. Wifes happy now though.

How would you have felt if you knew that was a rabid skunk someone had transported near your home and released it because they don't want to kill anything?

I understand not wanting to kill anything but if you have a skunk in a trap that's waht you need to do or get soemone else to do it for you.

Please do not transport and release trapped skunks.

A buddy gave me a recipe for skunk spray removal. One part each of dish detergent, baking soda and peroxide. He says he had to wash his dogs when they got sprayed and this mix took all the smell off. I've got all the ingredients set out in case I'm not as lucky this time.
Chuck

I've used this on both of my dogs that were sprayed directly and it does work.

Good luck on the lotto.:D

Well, I got lucky with the second skunk, too. They really don't seem to spook all that easy. As someone said, you can get pretty close to them if you act calm...whether you feel calm or not!

That grill cover is beginning to smell a bit. I left it down in the barn. Maybe it will drive off some other critters.

Anybody got favorite skunk related numbers I can play on PowerBall?

When my brother caught a skunk in a (borrowed) live trap we covered it with a heavy tarp and weighted it down on all sides. We then ran a pipe from the exhaust of the tractor under the tarp and let it run and an hour, the skunk died and didn't spray anything.

I used to have a boss that would describe a bad situation as like dealing with a rabid skunk and not knowing which end to avoid.
