You can sharpen the blades on the mower.


The bottom of the blades move TOWARDS the tractor so they move AGAINST the direction of travel.

DEWALT DW818 : 4-1/2" (115mm) Small Angle Grinder

And one of these flap disks:

And you'll be done before your eyes can get misty.

I think I'd want something I could hold with one hand comfortably while using a pair of lock pliers to steady the flail blade. Even a 4 inch electric grinder is too heavy for that. Maybe an air powered grinding tool or even a powerful Dremel type device. I don't expect to be in that position for a few more years though.

I really haven't had a problem using my Dewalt grinder with one hand. Just hold the blade with one hand while wearing a thick welding glove and grind away.


Have you ever used a flap disk? If not, give it a try. It'll grind metal so fast it's amazing. Now that's about all I use. A 36 grit will sharpen a blade in a jiffy.


Also, as Norm Abrams always says, remember to wear your safety glasses.

Nunya, could you please post the serial# of the blades you bought again? The link has expired.
I'm hoping that they'll fit my Betsco. I love the flail, but not the cut that it does with grass and weeds.

Again, thanks. Where in SC are you?

I've been cutting the back 3 acres with the bush hog the last few years and finally it's turned into a mixture of centipede, bermuda, crab grass, small sticks and pine cones. The y blades do great on the brush, but seem to just lay the grassy stuff down. Honestly, the hog cuts it just as clean.

I guess I'm picky. I'm looking for a near finish cut, with out dragging an extra 5 ft. behind the tractor, worrying about every small stick, and having to cut every week or two, like I would with a finish mower.

I understand. A flail mower isn't a perfect replacement for a hog and a finish mower but it will do an acceptable all around job without having to have multiple mowers.

If you can find a single blade that will work on your mower I think you'll be happy with the cut. One thing about the single blades, they will NOT cut in reverse. They will ONLY cut if your tractor is going forward. The Y blades don't cut well in reverse but they WILL cut. No biggy, just be aware of it.

Reg, were you talking about the picture that I posted? If so, that is a reference picture, not my flail, although mine is similar.. Now that you mentioned it, I don't know about the outside blades. I will have to check. If I remember right, I had some space past the last hanger, but if I see things beat to he**, then I will know.

No, this was from a rare fastidious moment I had when I first got my mower.
Sometimes I get this "thing" about new equipment and anticipate the day when I have to take it apart for maintenance/repair and find stuff rusted together.
I got the tools out and one-by-one took every shackle apart to grease the threads.
{OK, fastidious but rare}
That was when I noticed what I assumed to be an assembly error on the leftmost shackle, two Ls like this LL so I "corrected" it.

About a week later the tractor stalled as I engaged the PTO to mow, same thing happened when I tried again, so I investigated - - Yes, tractor off, key in pocket, mower raised but not properly supported, etc.
The leftmost shackle & knives had flopped down and jammed to the left, I was able to turn the shaft backwards and all was well. It is the sort of thing that might never happen again, but I remembered the correction I had made and correctly corrected it.

On any given mower it might never happen at all, just the randomness of where the drum stops and which way the knives and shackles flop when it spins down.

never tried a flap disk, will have to try it. Have had good luck doing touchups on mounted blades with a dremel and a stone
