HELP!!

I have had a heck of a time breaking that transmission filter loose on my 4240. It's the one by the step up. Now that it's finally "loose" ( I used a vise grip type filter wrench and hammer) it will rotate but it doesn't back off! It's the factory one with the gray paint. Could it be crossthreaded from the factory install? It's way past the hours for changing because I misread the owners manual but that shouldn't affect whether or not it backs off should it?

Thanks for any help out there.

I broke one filter wrench trying to get the one off my L4400 for the 50 hour service. Then we put two filter wrenches on it at the same time and two of us tried to loosen it and couldn't. I finally got an industrial chain wrench and got it loose destroying it in the process. I can't believe how tight the factory puts them on.

I took mine off for the first time last weekend... I understand that they are often a bear the first time and have read that the filter being painted along with the engine can contribute to the problem.
I wonder if with your persuasion you wound up separating the sheet metal can from the base and that the base (the part with the threads) is not spinning yet?

Best of luck!

I had the same trouble getting the hydraulic filter off my B2400. After reading some threads on here I realised that it was the original grey one fitted at the factory. That means it had never been changed before and I bought it with 1600hours on it!

I probably did now that you mention it. I am confused as to what is the filter and what is the engine.
IS that irregular shaped piece (with the notches) at the bottom of the filter part of the tractor or part of the filter?

Thanks

I've got 230. I didn't realize it was there. I changed the fluid at 50 hours and the other hydraulic filter as well. The service chart is confusing because it calls for a 200 hour filter change but not a fluid change. However the manual says to drain the fluid to change the filter?

And of course the factory filters don't have flutes at the top so you can use a cap wrench.

Thanks for your support.

And why the dealers don't warn you after you spend all that money:eek::(

I finally got it loose. I used the vise grip oil filter wrench on the base of the filter with the notches. I believe those notches accept a spanner wrench but those are pricey for a one time use. So I positioned the teeth of the wrench in the notches. I dropped the linkage out of the way (one cotter pin) to get a better wack. Hit it with a small mallet 5 or 6 times and it started to move.:D
