By late 2010, the new standard engine for the F-150 will be a 5.0-liter, four-valve, naturally aspirated V-8, developed under the code name "coyote." This eight-cylinder engine (described as having "huge heads") will be shared with the new Ford Mustang. Power figures are said to be approximately 400 horsepower and 400 pounds-feet of torque. Fuel economy is expected to be comparable to the current 5.4-liter engine.

In an interesting reversal of tradition for trucks, the premium engine for the light-duty F-150 will be a V-6. The new rear-wheel-drive version of the 3.5-liter, six-cylinder EcoBoost gasoline turbo direct-injection motor will occupy the top slot. Ford has officially said the EcoBoost engine will arrive next year with improved fuel economy and low-end torque with a broad, diesel-like torque curve through most of its power band. Our sources say it too will be rated at approximately 400 hp and more than 400 pounds-feet of torque. Gas mileage is expected to be at least 23 mpg on the highway.

Very interesting! By the time I am ready for a new truck I hope that the bugs in the new designs will be worked out. I'd sure like to get 23 mpg in my truck!

It depends what your needs are. If you need power to tow, maybe not too big. Maybe not big enough.

I've got a '95 Chevy 1500 5.7L. I went to CA last month, This time towing a 2-horse slant trailer. Going North 35, through the Metroplex, went up 287 to Amarillo, out 40 West through New Mexico (through Albuequerque), Arizona (through Flagstaff-near Grand Canyon), CA High Desert/Mountains (Barstow, 58 to Tehachapi), 46 to the Central Coast.

My truck did fine. Had to put it in 3rd (45mph) up those grades. But of course, all those 2500's, 250's and up that were towing, passed me on those grades with ease.

Up here in Canada, we have trucks that run on baby seals. I put a pile of them in my bed and then club them as necessary. Fuel efficiency is measured in MPS - miles per seal.

Oh yeah ..........1995 was a great year for GMC.......I still have one that has 270,000+ and going strong. went to Colorado from Arkansas in it last September..........

I got over 202,000. On that trip, coming back to Texas, just ~30 mi west of Amarillo, hit 200,000. Been watching the mileage all the way. It was at night. Pulled on the service road and took a picture. Do y'all get excited as I do when yours hits big round numbers?

Imagine that.....a "chebbie" going over 200,000 miles whilst pulling a 2 horse slant.
