I am not convinced that includes tractors

why would that not apply to tractors. they have 4 wheels right are they not as prone to rolling away as a car? i got it just remembered back on star trek, my pickup must have a "tractor beam" to help hold the it to the trailer. joking aside i have hauled with only one on each end with binders and got to my destination only to find one of them attatched, not worth losing a tractor over i think i'll use 4.

If you go to the heavy equipment section (over 10k lbs) you'll see that it says "under 10,000lbs you can do it this way (4, over 10k lbs) or as per the automobile section (under 10,000lbs)

You only need 2 tiedowns.
one in front
one in back

You need to hold down any hydraulic only buckets/arms. (backhoes or FEL's), so if you're tricky you can do the bucket and the front of the tractor with one, otherwise it takes two up front (one for the bucket/arms, one for the tractor)

But the tractor itself, under 10,000lbs only needs 2 tiedowns with a WLL of at least 50% of the weight of what you are hauling.

ignore the PDF, go to FMCSA website and look up the rules.

Awesome, exactly what I was looking for. That PDF has been deleted from my drive.

So we can consider FMCSA as gospel ?

And exactly which section applies to us ?, 393.128 ?

Yes, FMCSA is gospel, although some states are slightly different, that's 99.9% it. As a non-commercial person, you aren't going to get a hard time for meeting Federal DOT rules. IMHO (not a cop, not a DOT officer, didn't stay at a holiday inn express last night, do have a CDL-A, do operate a commercial business where I tie down every single day.).

I think it's .128 and .130 cover most of it. It's all in there.

you can buy a little green book (like 3 dollars) from JJ Keller that has all of it in there. Including out of service rules and chain and strap capacities, etc. And then you throw it in your truck and if someone questions it, you whip out the book and say "ok, where? explain it."

Here's the link: Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations Pocketbook or Handbook Detail - J. J. Keller & Associates, Inc. 007-ORS-A,017-H,017-HSP

why would that not apply to tractors.
.

A tractor fits the bill of "equipment and machinery" better then "automobiles, light trucks and vans" IMO

is that just a technicality or do they not roll as easy as a auto.
