Who do you let borrow your trailer?

Just thought I'd share something that happened today. We need to move our two goats to a live nativity scene at my school. So dad does some calling, and because he is a good driver and a trustworthy person, almost anyone would let him use their trailer. So, this one guy says we can go get his, but he won't be there. So we get there, hitch it up and go to a store to get something to eat. When we leave, we do a quick walk-around of the trailer. And get this-the tags were supposed to be re-registered in 7/07! We still have to use it, let's hope we get the hauling done safely without incident!

I have to agree with just about everyone, don't lend your stuff out. I end up getting the short end of the stick. Once you start to loan stuff out everyone will come a callin. Also I don't recommend selling something on credit to your friends it seems like they don't want to pay and are not in a real hurry to get you your money, or they abuse it and then you sold them something that was already tore up.

The best course of action is to selfish I guess.

No one.

I've loaned my trailer out a few times and EVERY single time it has come back with something missing or broken that "must have been that way when they took it" yeah right!

My solution was to buy gooseneck stuff. No one I know has the truck to pull my trailers anymore! I also bought my trailers under my business name and you need to have DOT numbers. I have DOT on my truck so hardly anyone would be legally qualified to pull it.

A few of us here that have known one another for a long time, lend things out to eachother. most times, we pick it up out of eachothers garage or wherever and leave a note on the front door. I borrow a 18 ft. bumper pull to haul my massey 165, The father in law uses my pj 20+5 to haul his jd 8200's and hay, go to another friend for his skid steer attachments and so on. If something breaks, it gets fixed by whoever has it when it breaks. So far, I've been around for 2 years and its worked out great. The rest of them have been doing this for around 15. So, who do I let borrow my trailers? Two others and their wives.

This thread reminds me of a funny story... A few months ago I was borrowing a trailer from a friend of mine that owns a propane company and as we were hooking it up to my truck, my friend made a smart-*** remark... "When Charlie borrows my trailer, he always brings it back with a dent, so be sure and bend something on it for me, will ya?"
We had a good laugh and I was on my way.... I used the trailer and didn't bend a darn thing on it...... until I returned it... I was pulling it into a good parking spot behind his shop and hit one of his big delivery trucks with the fender... nothing major but still, a dent...
Of course he began to give me a hard time and my defense was: "Well William, I was just doing as I was told... You know how I hate to disappoint you." :D

That's the substance of a long friendship: When you value the people over the stuff, and when you can have a light heart about mishaps.

Yup, it's only stuff. If you value your stuff more than your friends, then either you need new friends or your friends need a new friend.

I offer my stuff even when it's not asked. If someone is telling me a story about doing something, and I have a tool or what ever that would make his task easier or better, then I offer it. In most cases I am turned down because they don't want to take the responsibility for any damage or they want to do it without imposing on a friend and get in a situation where something happens. It wouldn't matter to me. A friend loans stuff to friends. A friend makes sure it comes back at least in as good of shape as it left. If that doesn't happen, then that person is not going to stay on the friend list for long.

BTW, my brother-in-law is not a friend. Ha!!
