Bugs in my corn

I know about the oil, but I've never done it; too lazy I guess. Putting one drop on the silk where it exits the ear seems very tedious as Luremaker suggested. I did consider putting some in a pump sprayer and spritzing each ear, but I was afraid getting too much oil on the silks might interfere with pollenation. I opted for dusting and my success was mixed at best. It didn't matter though. The 'coons finished off all my corn just as it got ripe. In one night, they distroyed the entire crop. I ain't growin' anymore corn just to feed the worthless 'coons. I'll buy my corn at the store. Last year, the Super Target where my grandson works put corn on sale at 10 ears for $1. It's not nearly as good as homegrown corn is, but none of those ears were chomped on by 'coons.

Jim, those coons are not worthless. Barbecued coon is pretty good eatin'. And our local Walmart has some very good fresh ears of corn right now for $.25 an ear.

This may be my last batch of corn as well. A friend dropped off a live trap today that I will set in the front garden. I put the dog out by the back corn patch near the barn. Don't know if that will do any good once they realize he can not reach them in the corn. At least he will raise a lot of noise and I might get a shot off.


I just hate to give up on it this close to actually getting a few good ears.
