Testing Hydraulic Cylinders

I have 8 Hydraulic Cylinders from a Loader Bucket, I removed each of the cylinders - there was fliud in each hose and each cylinder the oil was free flowing and clear. I would like to know if there is a way to test the cylinders in order to know if they will extend and retract as they should?

I contacted a local hydraulic shop and they will compression test each one for $65.00 and repair as needed....

I would like to test them in another fashion as I only need 4 of the 8 to function for the project I am working on...any assistance or ideals would be great.

I would put hoses and couplers on them and hook them to the remotes on the tractor

My hydro shop test with compressed air. I believe he uses a oxygen tank that has a 2500 psi rating to simulate hydro pressure. He has told me if it can hold air it will hold hydro fluid.

Thanks for the advice - I had planned to hook them up one or two at a time when I get the 3rd function set up on my Kubota next week - However I posted the question as the hydraulic repair shop warned against doing so as "trash" from the cylinders could enter the return hose and thus into the main holding tank...and as I am winging with help from TBN members I thought I should ask..


A follow up question -
Should I place an inline fiter on the return side of the cylinders during testing of the cylinders? TSC sells them for $32.00..would this trap any junk that may be in the used cylinders or would I be wasting $40.00?

If the fluid you pumped out(by manually cycling the cylinders) was clean and clear like you said, with no signs of debris or water then i would just hook them without worrying about it.

Thanks - I teach government and economic finance for a living - so the details are all I stress about.

I will push / pull until the old oil is out of the cylinders and then duct tape the cylinders closed until I can attach them to the tractor for testing.

Even college level students have a hard time understanding how we - the USA borrow from ourselves - then allow other countries to "buy" the debt and thus cause the USA to owe other countries for our debt.
