About 2.5 years ago I purchased a brand new SQ720 and used the snot out of it, today it froze up, and I discovered that the gear box never had oil in it! I expected that the dealer would take care of this in pre purchase prep, but I guess they overlooked it! I sent them a note asking about it, so I'll see what happens, has anyone had this problem before?

If you used it for 2.5 years I am guessing the seal went out and you lost the oil.

By the way the manual probably says something to the effect of check the oil level before each use.

Good luck with any dealer sympathy.

I'd bet you'll find the seal is bad. If it didn't have oil in it from the beginning, it would have seized a long time ago. Generally, with NEW gears, the clearances would be tight and they'd heat up and go south in a hurry. Good luck getting any sympathy at your dealer.

Not trying to be harsh dude, but this one sits in your lap alone.

I learned this very expensive lesson, always check your oil level before every use. The bottom seal can go at any time and you won't know that the oil is gone unless you check before each use. However, if the oil is gone then that thing will lock up fairly quick during use. Hopefully the dealer can help you out on parts but don't go blaming them as it never would have lasted 2.5 years with no oil unless this is the first time you used it since you bought it.

Well, checking brush hog gear oil before each use might be something....nobody does unless you run it 8-10 hours a day or something.

I check oil in tractor motor each time before starting, check hydro maybe every three times, look at sight glass on front end maybe every three times.

Brush hog maybe twice a year, same with tiller.

But never checking it[and thats what we are talking about here],not a good thing, seals can go at any time, nothing we can do about that, couple hours use, gear box gone.[maybe],who knows, never tested it,his may have never had gear oil in it,coulda just lasted this long.KK tillers don't come with oil in them.

A brush hog can run about 4 hours without oil, just on the grease from the factory.
Trust me, I know

After my experience with my woods cutter destroying bottom seals I check it every time as well as my rototiller and augers.
