Im all for individual freedoms, but a neighbor who was feeding deer like that would kind of tick me off. Were over populated with deer right now, the natural cycle (deer starving and dying) gets interrupted by these people's "good intentions" cause they're cute. We need a larger / longer hunting season anyways, as the numbers of hunters are on the decline.

Think about the repercussions. Besides damage to food crops, these deer are a major hazzard to people driving.

It's not the point.

Will -- don't want to start a fight with you or my neighbors. But yes they do try to tell me what to do -- The raccoon feeder went so far to write a letter (which she sent to the entire street) describing my barn cat and several others as 'problem strays' that she would trap and send to the pound. If we didn't start keeping them contained.

Obviously this did not go over too well with me -- I'm trying to get these people from away to understand the hardship they are causing -- w/o causing a feud.

I can protect my chickens from raccoons w/o too much trouble, but having to fence my gardens -- something I have not had to do in the past -- bc some massholes want to see deer from their kitchen window every evening is kind of irritating.

Good thing I can vent here - - otherwise might have already started a neighborhood feud ;)

Nor I, but 'telling' your neighbors how to live their life would get you one.

Had it been me, I would have doubled my feedings just in spite.

Are you getting my point yet ?

Oh, and by the way, you do need to keep your cat in your yard.

Mike, I feel for you, you've got a clash of cultures...

It's said that "education is the key"-- any way to get a F&G person to sit down with you all over coffee to explain the damage they're doing by feeding wild animals? If it worked, that might be an amicable way to help everybody.

Actually I don't - - talked to the Animal control officer -- as long as the cats are up to date on rabies shots they can roam. If they become a problem than the neighbor can all the ACO -- who said she'd tell the neighbor to stop putting out cat food if she doesn't want to see cats.

I guess that should be my next step -- they don't want to listen to me (city folk know best). A third party may be what is needed.

Anyone know of any brochures explaining the negatives I could have sent to my neighbors?

Just a thought -- in many places, unauthorized feeding of wildlife is illegal for a number of reasons. You might be able to just report it to Natural resources and get it taken care of by them:eek: Failing that I would suggest sudden onset lead poisoning if legal. The unrestrained cat would be an issue with me as well (but I would not be feeding racoons so I would be trying to compromise somewhere)
Another tack might be a little research on the effects of feeding wildlife -- if done in situations other then need, feeding actually does more harm than good -your neighbours probably don't know that and if you presented them with the facts they would probably stop.
