Upon further investigation, it was found to be written as "#2 Fuel Oil" on the receipt. The delivery company is still in business. I talked to the owner and was told that diesel fuel was often sold as heating oil whenever the price structure allowed it. He also told me that before the state legislated a defierence, #2 diesel and #2 heating oil were the same thing. The diesel oil just had additives as required by the fanchise agreement.
The oil is not dyed and it is clean looking. At the very least, I would run it through a filter and water seperator BEFORE pouring it into the tractor. I am still thinking about this. The price is right, but I really do not wish to do something so stupid that it ends up costing a lot of money.

By the way, who would check your privatly owned pickup for red die?

The DOT will check it. They tend to hang out where they can find a bunch of people that would have access to dyed fuel. An example would be your John Deere dealer's open house. They would sit out front and check every diesel tank during a "safety check" road block. The DOT has also been known to also go to farm auctions and sale barns and check for dyed fuels.

A guy in an old Mercedes running Biodiesel or veggie oil, I forget which, was fined by DMV here in NC a while back. He was at some large event down near Charlotte and DMV was down their dipping tanks. His car had stickers all over it about the car being run on veggie/bio.

Since he had not paid taxes on the fuel he was fined. It was a hefty fine as well.

Later,

The fine varies where you live. Here where I live I have heard the fine is equal to the road tax per gallon/mpg of truck times the miles on the truck. So lets say there is a $.040 per gallon of taxes and the truck has 100,000 miles and lets say 15 mpg. So in this case it would be about $2700.00

I have also heard that in some states its only $75 per occurrence.

I ran into the same situation as you last fall and thats what I ran in my tractor all winter long with no problems. I did run additive also.

Not to start hyjacking but, does anybody know if the DOT rules are by state?
You can buy partial bio-diesel that is meant for on road fuel that would not be dyed but taxes have been paid on the fuel. But if you were making 100% biodiesel at home and using it or mixing it with real diesel how would DOT know if you made it or bought it?
