Would you burn heating oil in your tractor?

/ Would you burn heating oil in your tractor? #21
I ran into the same situation as you last fall and thats what I ran in my tractor all winter long with no problems. I did run additive also.

Not to start hyjacking but, does anybody know if the DOT rules are by state?
You can buy partial bio-diesel that is meant for on road fuel that would not be dyed but taxes have been paid on the fuel. But if you were making 100% biodiesel at home and using it or mixing it with real diesel how would DOT know if you made it or bought it?

The Federal DOT rules on dyed fuel came from the EPA w/ the advent of low sulpher diesel fuel. The subsequent regulations requiring 'Ultra' low sulfur fuel will bring about additional enforcement.

If you added home filtered veg oils +/or bio-diesel to road fuel it won't show unless it changes the color. That's what they are looking for the color of off road fuel being used on the highways.

I decided to do it. I transfered my first installment of 55 gallons. The price changed to a flat $150 for the 200 gallons and the tank. I's still ok with that. I will keep an eye on my tractor to see if anything goes wrong qnd post the results on TBN.

around my neck of the woods, you would pay about that for an empty tank. Sounds like a heck of a deal. I wouldn't worry about it at all, filter it, add a little PS, and laugh every time you fill up.

I buy off road in 55 gallons drums, get a .05 discount per gal, and can't come anywhere near that price. If the tank doesn't look that bad, use it for your fuel center. You will be set back a couple of bills on a nice fuelling rig for that tank (filters, hose, pump, wiring for electric, etc), or go the cheap route and hand crank it.

nice find.

My dad had a very nice stainless steel drum he said I could have so I brought it home with me today. It had water stored in it but I can clean and dry it out easily. I already have the hand crank so I will be sticking with that route. What is PS?

The DOT will check it. They tend to hang out where they can find a bunch of people that would have access to dyed fuel. An example would be your John Deere dealer's open house. They would sit out front and check every diesel tank during a "safety check" road block. The DOT has also been known to also go to farm auctions and sale barns and check for dyed fuels.

If suspected they check your fuel filter for dye. If it is red you are busted. If you used taxfree fuel even once change your fuel filter.

I myself would buy it as it is a bargain , but i would find out a little more about it before i stuck it in a good engine . What's it's Cetane rating ? Will it lube the cylinders as well as Diesel ? If it is Sulphur free your pump seals will not live long . When we changed over to low Sulphur Diesel , the government paid to have all our injection pumps fitted with Viton seals . Those that missed out had pumps dying at an alarming rate .

P.S. is power service, which is a diesel fuel additive, for lubrication and cetane booster.

I have found some interesting threads in this forum complete with technical specifications and some funny anecdotes.

Here is the situation: 200 gallons of #1 heating oil is free if you can haul it away over 12 months and remove the tank it was in. The oil is clean and without water. It does not even smell bad. The oil is 4 years old. One can discuss enlessly the chemical diferences and such, but would YOU use it as fuel in YOUR tractor?
There is no difference in our heating oil and diesel fuel.

Here it would be the same as #1 diesel

Are you sure it is #1?
There is no diesel vs fuel oil around here.

Here where I am home heating oil in #2 grade and #2 grade "AG" diesel are the exact same product. Id run it
Only one fuel available around here.

Upon further investigation, it was found to be written as "#2 Fuel Oil" on the receipt. The delivery company is still in business. I talked to the owner and was told that
1*diesel fuel was often sold as heating oil whenever the price structure allowed it.
2*He also told me that before the state legislated a defierence, #2 diesel and #2 heating oil were the same thing.
1*Another way of saying same stuff.
2*Why would the state want for there to be 2 fuels for the same use or purpose?

*My dad had a very nice stainless steel drum he said I could have so I brought it home with me today. It had water stored in it but I can clean and dry it out easily. I already have the hand crank so I will be sticking with that route. What is PS?

* My Drum Set Up.
*Power service. An additive for diesel fuel.
I dump a quart of it ( white bottle ) in the 55 gallon drum each time I fill it up.

It is called TAX. Diesel has more tax than heating oil.
