John Deere 4120 and 1023E
Howdy guys (and gals, if there are any). I just bought 50 acres in Virginia and in the market for a tractor. I was researching the JD 4120 and found this forum. It's been a great source of info so far.

The land I bought is on the side of a mountain. It was select cut a few years back and now over grown with briars and Locust trees. There is still lots of big timber but every where they cut, they left piles of brush that the briars have now overtaken. I have my work cut out for me clearing the brush, cutting the briars and dodging the hidden rock under the brush and briars. I think I have settled on a John Deere that will be equipped with loader, bush hog and some day, back hoe attachment. I looked at one last weekend that already has the rear tires spread, filled and has the loader attachment. Now all I gotta do is suck it up and write the check. I'll post pictures as soon as I get the nerve to go look (or buy, as the case will be) again. :D

Welcome and good luck with those briers! I have land on the side of a mountain way south of you in NC. The dadgum briars and poison ivy have given me a run for my money. After 3 years I've managed to somewhat control both. Lots of generic Roundup and Triclopyr brush killer. The Roundup doesn't even faze the briars....and the brush killer has a struggle.;)

It seems that mountain land is somewhat cheaper in VA than in NC, I don't know why. If you know someone with a pest. lisc., you might be able to get rid of that poison ivy for good.;)

My father-in-law lives in VA and has a license. He's told me about something called ally (sp?) that he uses to kill the wild rose bushes on his farm. There is several creeks and springs on this land, so I am hesitant to do much spraying.

As of today, I am the proud new owner of a JD 4120 with FEL and M6 rotary cutter. We'll see how the bush hog does on the unwanted growth first.
