I am looking for all the information I can gather form experts such as you as to the development of a design which I will describe. I have a need for a hydra operation that operates a scisser type mechanical device that will shear 1/2 inch bolts or 1/2 inch rebarr. This device would be best designed by attaching a hydra pump onto a weed eater and engine platform. Operations would be for a person to power the pump by running the engine which produces fluid power to a sisser mechanism located about 6 feet from the head/pump. One blade would be stationary and the other stroke operational. Of course an expandable coil hose assembly would couple the pump and scisser/shear. I would expect the shear to opeate with either a pull or push piston and a trigger switch would operate the function device. Though I am a BSEE I have very very limited knowledge of hyra and would appreciate all the design help you can support me with, even if it is send me to another site. Just pls give me some direction.

Needed to assemble a prototype unit:
1) Estimated hp for engine and pump.
2) Trigger/switch ideas.
3) Scisser mech piston or other operational device.
4) Fluid reservoir container and size.
5) Formula/s used to estimate the above.

Is this not the "jaws of life" or very similar?

I'm pretty sure they use to use evenrude(sp) boat motors hooked to the pump in the tank.
I think they were at least a 4 or 5 horse power.

I just can't thank you enough for the help Mr. Patato Heads. If I wanted joke material I would have written other sites.

I know jaws of life operate simuliar but no cigar here, fool1.

Did I say boat motor or did I say weed eater, fool2.

I was informed earlier that this was the site to post my thoughts. I guess your friends at this site must have meant for me to ask some other forum.

I was simply stating weed eater / verses hurst power unit weed eater wouldn't have very much power.

I am an electric an / maintenance mechanic and I have done allot of re-bar work too I use 36" bolt cutters and have to put all my weight in to it to cut 1/2"

so figure 300lbs (I'm a big guy) at 36" with the re-bar at 1" on the other side of a compound lever (bolt cutter) arraignment you do the math

as for the smart "fool1, fool2 / Patato Heads" comments we are trying to help.

grow up and be constructive not insultive.

Ill add you to my ignore list

First off, a little politeness goes a long way. Insulting people is not going to get you much help here.

It sounds like you want a mini jaws of life or a powered bolt cutter...

I would recommend looking for something premade to do this, it will be much cheaper and safer than doing it yourself.
You might try this search: hydraulic bolt cutter - Google Product Search

Actually, a small Jaws of Life, sounds like exactly what you need, I was just trying to clarify. My uncle has exactly what you need as an attachement to a porta-power system at his bodyshop.

Don't think I will take the time to ask him what brand it is though there internet tough guy.

julian1,

I also have a hydraulic backpack made by Husky to power a hydraulic chainsaw. So, they do make what you are trying to design, I am sure it could be adapted to power a re-bar cutter.

Just an idea though, but if you have a 10,000 watt generator, you could use a plasma cutter to do all your cutting. or a Stihl 760 with metal cutting blade.

The battery powered unit above is about the most portable unit that I have seen.

The rescue type cutters might also work.

I also have some jet rods that would cut re-bar. What you need with those to make them work is a battery, and an oxygen tank.

You have a lot of options here with stuff already made up.

I have done some serious research on this subject even to call and discuss my requests with Jaws of life manufactures and other rebarr cutter manufactures and none have what I am needing.

What I need is not a heavy piece of equipment.
I do not need the jaws of life
I do not need a plasma cutter
I do not need a grinder
I do not want or need electrical operation.

What I need is to build a device (not on the market today) that will scissor cut mounted on one end of a expandable pole. Hydra operation powered by a weed eater motor.

In addition, my curse response earlier was in consert with the curse response stating the evinrude outboard motor. Now that response was un called for. So, in turn I responded. I am not looking for humor at this point. I am looking for some serious advise.

To you who have offered thanks for the advise.
