2544 won't mow in the middle

On my 2542 a small strip is left in the middle. I think it is due to being mounted too rigid. I'm going to loosen the attach points and see if that helps. My 1250 cuts much better.

How much difference is there between the stock blades and the high lift blades? Are they designed for bagging? Are they louder? (seriously, I'm surprised at how loud my deck is). My neighbor has an older JD 317 (who had the engine grenade on him a few years ago so he rebuilt it) that the only sound I hear when he's mowing is the sweet thrumm of the twin (I always loved the old Kohler and Onan flat twin sound). I can't hear the deck. On my Cub, if the wife is mowing, I hear more of the deck howl over the engine.

I replaced the 2 outer rear rollers on my 54 inch deck (3235) and now I get a horrible squealing noise whenever the tractor is moving (almost need ear plugs). I took an oil spray can and tried spraying between all the rollers (7 of them) and the noise stopped for about 15 minutes and then started again. I don't know if it's because of the new palstic rollers or something else. It didn't do that the first four years I had it. Maybe I need zerk fittings on the rollers<g>. I thought about drilling a hole in the center of each roller so I could oil them.

The wing is a little bigger to create more lift. They also seem a little more heavy duty. When I got my bagger it came with 1 high lift blade to be used on the discharge side. It worked okay. Much better with a full set.
The stock blades just don't seem to cut as well (at least to me).
I think it sounds like the hum of an airplane when mowing. It seems to get louder when the deck needs a good cleaning but other than that it doesn't bother me.

Where is a good source for the high-lift blades? Do you happen to have the part number handy? (Yes, I'll try to look it up also) I definitely think I'm going to get a set because I'm not getting the cut quality I should due to the thick grass and tall cut (setting 5). I need a little more suction to make the grass stand up at attention for a clean cut.

OK, I bought a set of high-lift blades. The problem is, though, that even using a block of wood to brace the blade all I'm doing is turning the spindle. That's right, the nut moves, but I can see the drive pulley turning as well. How do I exert enough force to break the nut loose without turning the entire spindle?

A pnuematic impact is the only way to go to break it loose. And make sure you use some anti-sieze when you put it back together.

Would have been much simpler to key the blades like cheaper mowers do. Now I have to find someone with a compressor & impact gun.

I just looked the part diagram for a 2544 and the spindle should have a a hex on the pulley side also for hold it from turning to take the blade off.

Thanks for that tidbit. I'll take another look-see tonight.
