Anyone know how to match bottom plow to tractor?

I have A JD 2440 (62hp, I think). I'm thinking a 3-bottom plow is all the tractor can handle, but have access to a free 4-bottom plow. Can anyone give advice. Thanks a ton.

I would think it would handle 4-14's ok. I was told for every 3 feet of disk you can pull you can pull one bottom of plow. I pull a 10 foot disk so I am looking at a 3-14 plow behind a 40 horse tractor. Some of the old Farmall M's would pull 4 bottom around here but 3 was better. Your tractor has more power then an M ever had. If you can get it for free I would just try it and if it is to big buy a 3 bottom but I believe you should pull it with no problem. A good speed for plowing is 4 to 5 mph.

Take the 4-bottom. If your tractor can't pull it, remove the last bottom.

I've got a 2440. Owned it since new in '79. It's done a little plowing in it's day. In all but the easiest of conditions, it'll have all the plow it needs with 3-16"'s. 3X14"'s would be an easy load. 4X14" is out of the question in my ground, and it's what I'd consider reasonably easy plowing.

The idea of removing one to make a three never crossed my mind. DUH!

I agree with FWJ we had a 3020 Diesel (65 hp) and a 4 bottom JD plow and it was all it wanted. Plus on the tricycle front it would get very light when the plow was picked up. I have had the front end high enough to clear a 4 foot high fence. Not a good feeling
