i'm buying a 1997 mahindra 485DI with 400 hrs for 5000 wondering if thats a good price

If that tractor is in good shape, you don't wanna pass it up- especially for that price. I had one (same year too) several years ago, that I purchased used from a Mahindra tractor dealer, and wish I never would have sold it. It is Definately a workhorse! I think it had 879 hours on it and I gave $6,700 for it. I kept it 2 or 3 years, put about 300 hours on it, and sold it for $6,600! And was still in as good of shape as when I bought it. Man that thing was a beast!

Within them 300 hours I put on it, I had a couple minor electrical problems, the power steering cylinder down under the front axle had to be re-packed once, the PTO shaft seal had to be replaced once, and the engine Oil Pan had to be replaced once (due to me getting hung up on a lighter stump in a clear-cut). And I think I replaced the headlight bulbs once also. All these situations were fairly easy fixes...

Just to let you know, the CarQuest engine oil filter number for the 97' Mahindra 485 DI is #85775.

this is my first tractor of any brand just baught 7 acres whats a good size brush hog for it and does this model have remotes the man claims its in excellent condition

Mine didn't have remotes on it. I ran a Bush Hog 5' Squealer rotary cutter on mine. I did put a 6' Squealer on it but wasn't too pleased with it. It was a lot lighter in the front end than it was with the 5', and I could tell the it took a lot of power from the tractor to run it.
If you'r not cutting too high of grass with it all the time, and dont have to go up many hills, a 6' cutter should be fine. I cut some thick stuff with the 5' and it was very powerful.

I had Mahindra Surpanch. It is the added brand anem here for 485DI & 585DI.
It works very fine and gives me lot of cooperation as well.
I had it for about 10 years, and upgraded to 585DI, as my cultivation grows.

I bought an old 485-DI last fall. I had to have new seals put in the steering cylinder. After I got it hooked back up, the manual says, "with the engine running at idling speed, turn the steering wheel several times from lock to lock to expel all air from the system which is self-venting". This certainly sounds like a simple method to bleed the hydraulics, but regardless of how many turns of the wheel in either direction, it never reaches a "lock". What to do?
